that i can set to a light that turns on when that beam is broken and remember a straight beam that detects nothing but something or someone breaks that beam?

Mike1942 hit the nail on the head, but you will probably need some beam shaping with lenses. Another easy way is with a cheap laser pointer. If it is daylight then you don't have to worry about the beam being seen. If you don't care about the visibility of the beam, then you can use the cheap laser pointer at night, too, and the beam shape is excellent!

Not a motion detector, but an infrared LED and matching IR sensor. You can find them in pairs at most electronic sites, including probably Radio Shack and www.digikey.com
