We recently adopted a cat and want to bring her to the vet for a "wellness" visit that we want to do annually. I'm not familiar with the average cost of check-ups at the vet so I'd just like to know what to expect. I believe she is also due for certain vaccinations, but the vet's website says those are part of the wellness visit. Does anyone have any insight on average vet costs? Thanks!

Many practices will roll the price of the exam into the cost of vaccinations. So if your cat is getting vaccinations, you may not have any other expense, i.e., the infectious disease vaccination is $25 and rabies $15, you wouldn't have an additional price for an exam. Many vets will do a fecal with a basic exam, that will usually be $15-30. However, it depends on what you want done. If you would like baseline bloodwork done, then that can be $40-80 or more, if you need treatment for fleas, worms or ear mites, that will also be more. Depends a great deal on where you are, of course urban areas are more expensive.

The prices vary from community to community. Here an office visit is $45 (SF CA area). The vet will examine the cat, feeling all over its body for any anomalies, should record the weight of the cat, and look at the condition of the mouth and teeth.

If the vet finds something that he feels needs investigating there can be additional expenses for a blood panel. My cats don't get shots so I am not familiar with those prices.

At any rate you start with the office visit and you should feel free to ask the vet for the charges for any additional medical work, which you can accept or decline.

I am "semi-rural" and the vet check up is $35. This includes one shot and you end up paying any extras, like extra shots, flea medication, etc. But if you go in with a scratch, it's $35+$10 for topical cleaning (hydrogen peroxide then neosporin) + 12 for penecillian, + 17 if they have to shave the area +22 for stitches, +14 for rabies, 22 for hiv, ......you get the idea. The wellness checkup is the best bargain, because they comely look over the cat with you and answer all your questions (have a LIST., you will forget)..... in fact, do a web search, they have vet check lists that are very good. try this site too for lots of info -

You can call your vet and ask what their fees are, they tell you them over the phone.

In the midwest here a checkup is $35. Rabies shot (one year, not the three year one) is $15, the 3-in-1 shot for distemper is $18.
