Hate?
I see from some of the answers, above, that some need to refer to the Book before answering.
Yes, it does say "...but Esau have I hated."
The problem is one of translation. Ash Hebrew scholars and they will tell you that a more accurate rendition is " ...but I don't love Esau as much".
You still ask "Why not?" and justifiably so. The answer to this question is because Esau hated (despised, thought of no value, did not want) his birthright. Esau also thought the things of God of no value. On the other hand, Jacob (Israel) aspired to everything God had for him and wanted as much of God as he could get.
Hope this helps.

Where in the book does it say God hated Esau? Just because Jacob got the goodies doesn't mean God didn't love Esau.

Must realize what Esau did in the 1st earth age.
God does not hate just for hating..Esau rejected God in the 1st earth age.

He hated Esau because He knew him. God knew hiim before he was made. God knows the end from the beginning. Just like He will judge all those people who will curse Him during the reign of the Anti-christ.

I don't think God of Genesis hates Esau. If there is Hate from God of Genesis, then the whole Christian belief will break down. Because , Christian is based on the BENEVOLENT GOD.
Ah existence of the God is not relevant to your question I believe.

because He loved Jacob.
read back to that story, jacob wanted the birth-rite. but esau didn't care anything for the promise that God made to abraham and sold it to jacob for a bowl of pottage. therefor God saw esau as profane.
esau represents everything about the physical birth. jacob represents everything about the spiritual birth. it goes very deep. it is why God commanded later that the descendants of esau, the amalekites were to be put to death by king saul, the flesh had to be put to death because there was nothing good in it. this is why moses lifted the rod of God in the desert, this is why Jesus hung on the cross.

the word "hate" is a word of choice, not the human emotion of negative attitude.
You could say that God chose Esau over Jacob before they were born so that it would be by God's election or choice.
