When was at church one day there was a list of 7 things like "They shall not kill" and so on. Well, one of the commandments was They shall not swear. But I haven't seen it ANYWHERE since. Only on that thingy. It was a Naz. chuch to incase that matters. Does that mean swearing as in swearing to God or cussing or both? I know most of you Christans are going to say cussing is a sin, but is that just what most Christans belive in? What if you do? What will God do to you? If you ask me I would say there just words or some of aren't to bad like da*n it's just like saying dang or darn just in another saying. i don't cuss, but I'm just saying.

Please answer. Thank you.

Swearing and/or using the Lords name in vain is a sin. This is stated in the 10 Commandments. It is desecration of God's name & is forbidden. Ex. 20:7, Matt 5:34, James 5:12.

There will be punishment for swearing, just like any other sin. God is very forgiving, thankfully. I will ask him for his forgiveness. If you pay attention to someone who is cursing, it just sounds stupid really. They usually are looking for attention, and want to look powerful.

The Ten Commandments say "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain." So, it's telling you not to say the word God when you are really frustrated or something like that. Cussing can be seen as similiar to that, but I think of cussing as really some impolite words. I don't think of cussing as a sin, but I think it's a dirty habit. Most churches encourage people not to cuss, but I don't think a lot of Christians consider it a sin.

What would God do - I don't know for sure. Frankly, I believe there are things that offend God a lot more than having a bad vocabulary. So I don't think he will strike you down or make you burn in hell or anything. Just be sorry you let it slip, and He won't think badly of you. I know plenty of Christians who do swear believe me. I'm a Lutheran Christian and I've let a few slip a few times. I think God just shakes His head and says, "Get a better vocabulary."

Cuss words are just words...so the words themselves are not the problem. What can be the problem is how the use of those words affects others. If you say....oh I hate dogs...and your statement causes someone else to be uncomfortable, then wouldnt that be sinful in a sense? Or, if you say a word that brings to mind a picture of something that you know God would not approve of....does that word necessarily have to be a cuss word? The answer is yes. Our language is very complicated but the key to knowing what is right to say and what is not right to say is how it will be taken by a person who hears you say it. I dislike hearing some words because they make a beautiful God given pleasure into something disrespectful and dirty. It is my reaction that makes it a cuss word even though some people think nothing of hearing it. It is not the word itself...but its effect.

What you saw was a poor or mistranslation or paraphrase of the 2nd of 10 commandments God gave to Moses on Mt Sinai towards forming his chosen people of Jews and his laws for everyone in humanity.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain for anyone who utters the name of God to misuse it will not go unpunished.
Swearing is the misuse or abuse of God's name.
Even saying Omy God! as an exclamatory expression is swearing because it is an irreverent use of his name as merely a useful device initially caused by satan to diminish reverence for God and his name.
Imagine if all mention of your mother's name was associated with prostitutes. You'd feel offended right? even if no reference was being made to your mother personally? The punishment may be its natural psychological spiritual consequences. Misusing God's name causes a spiritual descent into a lower state each time, like any other sin does. Jesus forbade swearing but he was talking about swearing an oath in God's name to cause confidence in others, misusing God's holy name for ulterior purposes.
There's no commandment against saying damn it or ****. Those are offensive profanities to the ear of others but the prohibited sin is in misusing God's name or the name of Jesus without due respect. Anyone with a habit of profanities can not get into heaven until they are totally purified of it all.

Sins are defined by not doing what is right.
Not by doing what is wrong.

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
Genesis 4:7

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
1 John 1:8-10
