My son is 6 yrs old and has had a lymph node on the side of his neck for about a year. It started out the size of a marble and then went to the size of a nickel. I have spoken to the doctor about this and they said to "watch it" . Well, tonight I took him to the local ER because it was bigger than usual. He has not been sick or anything but looks that way out of his eyes. They told me he needed a biopsy! I am getting this done ASAP but until then could anyone give me and idea on what this might be! Does this sound like cancer? Any advise or anything would be great. Im very worried and no little about this. ANYTHING WOULD HELP! PLEASE!

The biopsy will be the answer to all your questions. It will probably take a week or two to get the answer. Pester the doctor to get results. In the mean time do not worry. If it is benign, they just remove it. It is is cancerous, it is a form of lymphoma. Either Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's. These diseases have a high success rate of getting into remission and never appearing again.

I had non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma about 11 years ago. After 2+ years of chemo I was told I was in remission. I go in twice a year for blood work and I am still fine. I really would not be over anxious about this. Do it one step at a time. First find out what it is. Then find out what they are going to do about it. The whole time remember if you showed fear the 6 year old will catch it. Just be normal with your son. And be normal with yourself.

Any lump or bump located anywhere on the body that starts to grow needs to be taken seriously. You have done the right thing, now you need to follow through and have the biopsy done right away. No one in the ER could tell you what this lump was and no one here can tell you either . . that is why they do a biopsy. Just stay focused, take him back to his pediatrician, and get a biopsy. That is all you can do right now. There is no sense in worrying about what it is or is not. All that will come in good time.

My son has cancer and we deal with uncertainty of life and death on a daily basis, so I understand how you feel . . hopefully this will just be a scare and your baby will turn out to be just fine.

Stay strong and hopeful. You can deal with this because you have to. Trust me.

A fine-needle aspiration is generally not indicated for a lymph node biopsy. In general, the whole node is excised. That's what happened for me.

It's difficult not to worry, but how has his general health been? If he is pretty normal, then it is less likely to be anything terribly serious. If he's been losing weight, feeling very sick, etc., then it is more likely to be serious.

It's hard to tell. That's why the do the biopsy.
