Yes they most assuredly, blasphemously did, and sites like http://www.utlm.org/ abundantly document this, but while they no longer do, how they could teach it is the pertinent issue. The Biblical means of persuasion presupposes that sincere truth seeking sous can and will be convinced of doctrine as In they carefully examine it for themselves. The common people heard Jesus gladly (Mk. 12:37) and the Holy Spirit called the Bereans noble bcz "they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so" (Act `7:11).
However, in a cultic system, man is exalted above the Bible, usually as an autocratic way, and thus they can make doctrines that fail the test of Biblical examination, and must rely on an extra Biblical authority and source. Rome has her Pope and Teaching Magisterium and "church tradition," while Mormonism has its "living prophet" and Book of Mormon fantasy. This all is very dangerous, not only because it leads to the deception and damnation of souls, but as the Roman Inquisitions and the Mormon Utah War and Meadows Massacre show, their adherents can do many things that are clearly unBiblical. In short, nothing really prevents the LDS form teaching the Adam God theory, or from becoming a physical Theocracy (except the US Gov.), using means that the early church did not.
As for the issue at hand, On April 9, 1852, Brigham Young, the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), taught from the pulpit of the Salt Lake Tabernacle that Adam was Michael the Archangel, and that he was also the Ancient of Days. Young went on to conclude that Adam was, in fact, "our Father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do." He closed this topic warning, "Now, let all who may hear these doctrines, pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation."
Further substantiation that this was not just an “opinion, is found in Brigham declaration, "I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men that they may not call scripture" (J. of D., Vol. XIII, p. 95). Scripture of course, is the class of revelation that the Bible explicitly affirms is inspired of God (2Tim. 3:16).
Evidence as shows that Young was teaching what Joseph Smith started, who said, "Daniel in his seventh chapter speaks of the Ancient of Days, he means the oldest man, our Father Adam..." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 157). http://www.mrm.org/topics/god-father/adam-god-brigham-youngs-theory-or-divine-doctrine But this refers to Jesus.
Brigham Young also stated in his earliest "Adam-God" message, "When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten Him in His own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who is the Father? He is the first of the human family... Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven. Now remember from this time forth and forever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost" (J. of D., Vol. I, pp. 50-51).
But, Matt. 1:18 and Luke 1:35 both state Jesus was begotten by the Holy Spirit, so somebody is wrong! Some Mormons think that Brigham's message about "Adam-God" was misquoted. But, Brigham himself declared, "I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men that they may not call scripture" (J. of D., Vol. XIII, p. 95). Brigham's Adam-God sermon was not only preached on April 9, 1852, and then printed in the J. of D., but it was again printed 19 months later in the LDS Millennial Star (No. 48, Vol. XV, Saturday, November 26, 1853). Brigham also declared, "God revealed to me... that Adam is our Father and God" (Deseret News, June 18, 1873). http://www.utlm.org/onlinebooks/mclaims2.htm
"Adam–God theory (also called the Adam–God doctrine) is a doctrine taught by Brigham Young and some early leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) involving the status of Adam as the God of humanity.
During the life of Brigham Young elements of the Adam–God theory were taught in church meetings, sung in church hymns, and included in the church's Endowment ceremony;"
In addition, Mormonism also blasphemously makes God out to be a married polygamist! "The Scripture says that He, the Lord, came walking in the Temple, with His train; I do no know who they were, unless His wives and children . . ." LDS President and Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 13, p. 309.
"We have clearly shown that God the Father had a plurality of wives, one or more being in eternity, by whom He begat our spirits as well as the spirit of Jesus His first Born, and another being upon the earth by whom He begat the tabernacle of Jesus (Mary - ed.), as his only begotten in the world. We have also probed most clearly that the Son followed the example of his Father, and became the great Bridegroom to whom kings' daughters and many honorable wives were to be married. We have also proved that both God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ inherit their wives in eternity as well as in time . . . LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 172.
"If none but Gods will be permitted to multiply immortal children, it follows that each God must have one or more wives,"
LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 158
"The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy. ...I heard the revelation on polygamy, and I believe it with all my heart, and I know it is from God..."
LDS President and Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, p. 269, August 19, 1866

"Whether God the Father gave Mary to Joseph for time only, or for time and eternity, we are not informed. Inasmuch as God was the first husband to her, it may be that He only gave her to be the wife of Joseph while in this mortal state, and that He intended after the resurrection to again take her as one of his own wives to raise up immortal spirits in eternity."
-The Seer, Vol.1, No.10, p.158-p.159
"Elders, never love your wives one hair's breadth further than they adorn the Gospel, never love them so but that you can leave them at a moment's warning without shedding a tear. Should you love a child any more than this? No.” - The Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p.360
But the Bible teaches God always was God (Ps. 9:2), and that He is of the class of spirit (Jn. 4:24), the essential nature of which is not flesh and blood (Lk. 24:39), and that in the afterlife people are not married
(Mat 22:30) "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven."
Much more could be exposed about Mormonism (see links below), but space prevents it, suffice to say while the Bible refutes Mormonism, it also speaks of them, as it warns of those who "preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel", "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2 Cor 11:4, 13-14)
And while we may marvel at how they could believe the many more unBiblical absurdities of Mormonism, from Smiths' tale of Semites fighting in New York to eternally pregnant wives, etc., we must realize we are actually dealing with a very intelligent demonic being (the devil) that is empowering Mormonism, and whose power to delude souls can be very strong, and thus we must pray for those who follow the LDS.
Thus may we not only contend for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude v.3) - which is what we see in the Bible versus Smith's additions - we must also pray, that perhaps God may grant them repentance unto the acknowledging otf the truth (2Tim. 2:24).
