She had too much done at one time. The plastics guy I work with won't do that much surgery in one sitting - too risky. She apparently had a mastopexy, abdominoplasty and liposuction.

She also, apparently, had other health issues that should have been addressed prior to having anesthesia or surgery. She shopped around until she found a doctor who didn't hold her or himself to the highest standards of safety. Look where that got her!

If your mom is considering surgery, she should do the following:

1. Consult a board certified plastic surgeon who works with board certified anesthesiologists.
2. Follow his/her medical instructions to the letter. That may mean a trip to the family doctor to be checked out for heart disease, lung problems, etc.
3. If she smokes, quit now and forever. Smoking increases the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia. Many plastic surgeons will not operate on smokers.
4. Insure that the facility where the surgery is to be performed is accredited. It may be in a plastic surgeon's office, but look for AAAASF, AAAHC or JCAHO accreditation.

MOST patients do very well. MOST surgeons and anesthesiologists are committed to patient safety.

The death of Kanya West's mom was not becasue of the surgury its self but the Annestisaia( i dont know how to spell that) but its the part where they put you to sleep. If you are in bad shape your chance of dieing goes up. Usually you do not die but there is a chance. I think that the benifit from a breast reduction is greater than the danger of dieing but do what you think is best.
good luck

From what I've heard, she was told by a qualified Dr. that she wasn't fit for cosmetic surgery but decided to go to some hack.

It was her own fault. Period.

Tell your host mom to go to a board certified plastic surgeon and follow all his/her instructions. If she is told that she should not have elective surgery for whatever reason (heart trouble, medication, etc), then she should listen. Otherwise, plastic surgery is as safe as walking down the street.

This is pure speculation based on what has been released in the media.

Donda West complained of severe shortness of breath about one day after surgery, then died very soon after (to the best of my recollection from the media accounts). She was known to have "heart problems" and she was "on medication"

While we may never really know what she died from, there are two major problems that can cause these symptoms:

Acute heart failure (likely precipitated by a cardiac arrhythmia)
Pulmonary embolus (blood clot from leg/pelvic vein lodges in pulmonary artery).

Anyone who is over 50, or has chronic medical problems should get medical clearance before elective surgery.

Surgery is a risk, but just because one person has died because of it (and we do not know the FULL details) does not mean that everyone will.

I had a reduction Feb 2006 and don't regret it one bit.
