It's never happened to anyone I know from the states. Apparently limewire is "not illegal" here in Canada, so I haven't been faced with this problem... though I hardly use Limewire or Frostwire.
I'd say your chances of being caught are slim since they can't possibly fine everybody who uses Limewire in the US... However, I wouldn't recommend particularly high usage of the program. Y'know, just to be safe.
But I'd have to say that your friend is correct that downloading music instead of paying for it technically is "piracy"...

Technically it's not illegal because "technically" you're not downloading anything. To download you'd need to be connected to a website. Limewire is what's called a Peer to Peer Network.. meaning.. you're not connected to a website.. but instead.. connected directly to the computers of the people who use the program. As a musician though.. I gotta say.. if you like a song.. don't be cheap... pay the artist for god's sake! You can get downloads legally for about 99 cents on dozens of sites. If you think writing songs is easy... give it a try sometime. It's not.. and the talent and effort deserve to be rewarded.

If you CAN buy it somewhere (like it's a commercial CD you can buy at the store) and you download it off Limewire, it's copyright infringement and it's illegal.
Even if you only put it on your iPod, it's still considered "stealing" music. The only way it's legal is if the music is stuff that you CAN'T buy anywhere else - like if your friend's band records a demo or something.
There are sites like SpiralFrog.Com where you can download music for free legally, but music from Limewire is almost always illegal.

I have downloaded music from limewire and then imported it into my ipod and so far I have not been fined.
The thing is that when I try to import videos from limewire to my ipod they get into ipod as movies with no audio.
Backk to your question, I do not think you can get fined for three reasons:
-how are they going to know where u got it from? It could have been from a cd u bought and u ripped....
-how are they going to track down the zillions of people who do it?
-AND, who the hell are 'THEY'?

This is an ongoing argument fueled by the misinformed. Legally they can do nothing about it. They will sometimes take people to court though, but rarely win. Nobody can fine you though. There are extremely low chances of them finding you anyway.
Limewire though, is illegal. It's legal to share files, but Limewire sells a program to share them. You can't do this, and a bunch of these guys have been shut down.
A good alternative is Ares, if you use Windows. It's legal, and it's faster.
I use Frostwire on Linux. It's good, but I think there are better ones. I just haven't looked.

Put simply if you need to pay for the music on itunes and not on limewire it is pirating. So almost everything including the ipod music is pirated.

Limewire is completly free. You can not get fined unless you are caught selling burned CDs. Although i do recommend Frostwire. Its a better program by the same people as limewire.

technically it's filesharing so....its not legal. haha. :)
i think i'm going to have to go with the classic excuse "but everybody else is doing it", though.
i would be VERY VERY careful. limewire jacked up my computer almost past the point of no return. if my father wasn't an I.T. guy then I would have never gotten all the crap off. my poor computer is still recovering - thank the lord for AVG. haha.
my point is. be careful. i accidentally downloaded a song that was, apparently, all a virus - NOT cool. haha.
anyway, my point is - i don't think that i'm a terrible person - but to be completely honest... if everybody else was jumping off a bridge... i wouldn't want to be the last one alive... ;) haha
i'm very proud that you are morally sound though and you don't like, want to go to hell for using limewire, haha. i can respect that. good luck in your moral endeavors.
