Obviously some believe that people need to be saved from themselves. The problem is many of these people are in bondage from the very thing they are selling. But the real purpose of preaching and converting others is to inform people about God and the coming destruction on the other side of death. Who's telling the truth? That is the ultimate question.

If you REALLY believe you've found the ONLY path to salvation, then if you DIDN'T try to let as many people as possible know about it, you'd be a really sucky person, wouldn't you?
Here's a nasty metaphor: Imagine you're in a lifeboat and everyone else is drinking saltwater instead of their own urine. Gross, I know, but it's actually better for you than saltwater, the first time or two. You know that, they don't. Wouldn't you plead with them to do something they REALLY don't want to do--something that's probably quite distasteful to them, so that they might have a chance of surviving?
Persons who preach the way you mention don't usually love it for its own sake, but for the same reason you'd beg your fellow castaways to do the unpleasant, To save their lives. Remember, they don't believe this just to defy you and be jerks, they honestly believe they've found the right path and you have yet to. Otherwise there's no end of more fun (and lucrative) things to do.

It isn't about pressuring people to convert....at least, it isn't when my church does it. We give people a copy of the books of John and Romans from the Bible with a couple of gospel tracts, and we don't put on the pressure. We tell them that Jesus Christ loves them and died so their sins can be paid for. If they want to get into a conversation we will.
The reason we do it? Because Jesus told us to go into all the world and preach the gospel unto every creature, telling everyone we meet about Him and about how they can have forgiveness for their sins. We do it because we care about them. If we didn't care we wouldn't do it.
If you found what you believed to be absolute truth that could save people's lives, wouldn't YOU tell them too?

As an Atheist, if someone preaches to me about becoming religious again (I do admit I was once a Catholic), I simply ask them, what's the point? Then I tell them all the beauties of being an Atheist and completely turn the whole conversation around on them.

There is no purpose in trying to force someone to believe the way you believe. It is an individual choice the relationship they have with God, and an individual choice not to have a relationship should they so choose. At the end of our journey we will stand alone for whatever mistakes we have made....as it should be. I do not belileve in selling religion door-to-door; as you probably know, many religious figures of our day have been caught cheating on their wives, and dipping into the till.

And this is what they told me. "...to give something to society so they will give me something to eat. I have no skills and this is how I got brainwashed. If I get more to eat or get cars and more material things, I am even better at it than someone else. Some churches have pretty nifty retirement programs, better than those that bust hump working with their bodies...to the bone. So I am being smart and just trying to make my way in the world, and if somebody doesn't like it, they don't have to participate. I just take the ones that do. Some people find what I do, entertaining"

Believe me my dear, it's money! Religion is the best business
in town. The purpose is not to save souls but to pay the salaries of the Clergy. I don't wonder about the collectors; I wonder about the donors that let themselves be persuaded.

Idk but I find it really annoying and presumptuous. I will never join a religion period. But if someone was interested in converting to a religion they would seek it out. I think visiting people at their homes with "the word of god" is harassment. I doubt they gain many converts that way. They probably just annoy a whole lot of people.
To the person above who was saying that they just wanted to share the good news b/c they "know" it's the right way and they want to share what makes them happy. That's fine and dandy.. but only if I ask you to share. If someone is truly interested they will come to you and ask you. But I don't enjoy being woken up at 8AM by someone knocking on my door with a jesus pamphlet in their hand.

Various prize levels.
Makes me wonder why Christians are convinced that gays and lesbians try to win converts. If I convert one more straight guy before December 31, I'll win a flat screen TV.
In this day and age, is there really ANYONE in the USA who has not heard the story of Jesus yet? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone?

Although I do not go from house to house as you say, I believe it is the purpose of all believers to bring the news of Jesus to as many as possible...if only to plant a small seed that may or may not take hold. Jesus last command to the deciples was to go out and preach the word to all the earth.
