Responsible gun ownership is just one small part; aggressive policing of high crime areas, stiffer sentences for criminals and responsible upbringing are more important aspects that can be achieved.
However, it has been proven that states with stricter gun laws have higher crime rates than states with less restrictive gun laws (as per FBI Crime stats)

No you would have Anarchy, one of the reasons weapons were removed from peoples hands back in the 18602 1890's was to control the gun crime by so called cowboys, instead of people taking the law into their own hands, and being Judge, Jury, and executioner.

Here is one example:
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/9553C0B469F89078862573BF000DCF98?OpenDocument
But gun ownership by the ignorant is not a good thing either:
http://www.altondailynews.com/afullstory.cfm?newsfile=2007-12-28-40_Shooting%20Under%20Investigation&start=1
If everyone owned a gun, crime may go down, but, given how ignorant a large part of the population is, deaths would definitely go up!!!!!!!

There's many a gun in Texas and it is the state with the most per capita police officer killings. I believe that criminals should be getting the message that citizens have had it and are determined to protect their life and property. The problem is you have criminals who due to mental problems see nothing as a deterrant. Their thinking is so impaired that they don't feel the threat of a possible concealed carrier or a well armed homeowner. If they are stealing for drugs they will not be scared off by the possible threat of a gun.

Certain types of crime would. Most Criminals do not expect to get caught anyway or they would not commit the crime and someone is always looking for a quick buck rather than doing honest work for it. I think if everyone had a weapon it would be a deterrent, but it would not solve our crime problem. It would not help deter stupid criminals at all.

one thing the most people here arent acknowledging is that gun control laws dont really mean much or affect any of the criminals. they mostly serve to resrict the general population's access to the means to defend themselves, which work out perfectly for the largest gangs that exist (police). how far dyou think those idiots at columbine would have gotten if all those teachers and staff members had been armed?

Studies have been done that show states that people carry weapons crime has gone down. The bad guy is afraid that the person they pick to rob will have a weapon. And that is the way it should be.
I also feel before someone is able to buy a weapon he or she should be trained in the correct way of handling and storing of such weapon.

Maybe not everyone having a gun but I believe if law biding citizens all had guns criminals would be hesitant to enter homes, mug people, carjack etc.
