A new law that penalizes employers who hire illegal immigrants goes into effect Tuesday. But the impact can already be seen in many ways here in the Valley.

The Mexican Consulate located in downtown Phoenix is swamped.

Undocumented immigrants are going there to get Mexican birth certificates for their U.S. born children that will ease the way for the kids to be enrolled in school, and will assure there are no problems should the family be deported.

Some say they are fearful without the certificate because Child Protective Services could take custody of their children.

Deputy Counsul Alfonso Navarro-Bernachi says applications for Mexican birth certificates are up 100 percent since last year.

People are also filling out forms claiming their personal property so it will not be subject to an import tax when they cross the border.

Some employers say they've been hit hard.

Placido Castellanos, owner of Casa de Mariache in Phoenix, says because he’s lost some employees and a good portion of their customer base, he may have to sell.

"We're only making about $200 a day," he said. "With our mortgage at several thousand dollars a month, we just can't make it."

Placido Castellanos restaurant can't be hurting too bad. Even at $200.00 a day (and average 30 days each month) He still makes $6000.00 monthly. If it were an American business owner siting the same thing, they'd be called a whiner.

They are also obtaining other documents for themselves at those Mexican Consulates. Some along the lines of them being here legally, and id.

this could work now that Placido Castellanos, owner of Casa de Mariache and the rest of his legal workers will no longer have jobs they can pick our vegetables for us, thus eliminating the BS story of how expensive it will be if we deport all illegals. businesses will fail (they do every day) those workers will then be available to fill the jobs vacated by the deported illegal immigrants. this is so far working out just like we said it would remove the incentives and illegal immigrants will leave. there will be more clamping down as oklahoma and arizona are looking to tighten up their laws. FROM the article; Representative Terrill says he's already working on the next stage of 1804. His plans include making English the official language of Oklahoma, strengthen the current law to give law enforcement more power, force schools to report the number of illegal immigrants in its district and take a closer look at challenging the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S., even if their parents are not citizens. FROM the article; The architect of Arizona’s new employer sanctions law, which takes effect Tuesday, is crafting a series of new measures aimed at those who enter the country illegally.

Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, said he is introducing measures this session to:

-- expand the state crime of trespassing to cover anyone in this country without authorization.

-- require proof of legal presence in this country to register a vehicle or get a vehicle title.

-- deny workers’ compensation benefits to undocumented workers injured on the job.

-- bar local communities from having policies that prohibit police officers from checking the immigration status of those they encounter.
Pearce acknowledged courts have ruled the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution — the one that freed the slaves — guarantees citizenship to anyone born in this country. But he said extending that to those born of parents not here legally is based on a misreading of the amendment. He notes that the amendment says citizenship requires not just birth in the U.S. but also that the person is “subject to the jurisdiction’’ of this country, something he said does not apply to those here illegally. This should have happen after the 1986 one time amnesty for those who were not here for that one time amnesty. I say better late than never. My wish would be that every state would take illegal immigration as seriously as AZ. We will consider it a success when the Mexican Consular closes it's doors as well

That's great news! I hope other states follow suit quickly! Now if Cali would enact something similar, that would be some real icing on this cake....

Isn't it interesting that the kids need to be able to prove they are Mexican citizens to enroll in Mexican schools?

Also interesting is the fact these people know they have to obtain documents for legal entry back into Mexico.

the system can and will work if put to use.as far as the business owner he should be fined and audited just for admitting he was hiring illegals.

I think it's wonderful. Is this a federal law or simply an Arizona law? If it isn't federal, it needs to be.
