I've been researching a photographer named Eugene Atget. Couldn't figure out what his quote meant: "A good photograph is like a good hound dog, dumb, but eloquent."
Not sure what he means by "dumb".

I believe it means that a good photograph should be simple and not complicated. Too much "image" can make it difficult for the eye to travel around on the photo, it can tire the eye. A precise, effective image, well composed, is better than a 'busy' image with much going on within it.

When I say "tire the eye", I don't mean that the eye would physically become tired from looking at the photo, I mean that the viewer's conception of the image would be tiring.

I hope that helps you.

Dumb means quiet like people would be called dumb in older times when they could not speak. So this qote therefore means that a good foto is quiet but very nice.
