I'm looking for one of these?

Question

My grandmother used to have a flour sifter. It was a silver tin cup with a screen over the bottom and had a red knobbed crank. When the crank was turned it forced the flour through the screen. She used to let me crank for her when I was a kid and I was thrilled to help. I haven't seen one since. Do they still make these?

yeah they still make them but they just don't look the same the one I remember kind of looked like a coffee can with a screen and a half circle attatched to a red wooden knob crank. I wish I had an old one- So just keep a look out or do a search.

Go to Pricegrabber and type "sifter" into the search field. They're listed under bakeware.

The reason sifters are harder to find is that fewer and fewer people actually bake from scratch. When many do bake, they just toss the ingredients in without doing things like sifting or weighing the flour.

Yes!! They DO still make them. I just bought one a couple of years ago. It's in my cupboard right now!! I used it to sift flour for all my Christmas cookies. Bought it brand new and it has a wooden knob on the handle, just like Grandma's...though it is just plain wood, not painted red. I got it at a local kitchen specialty store. Just check around. I am sure you will find one.

They're harder to find, but you can still get them. They often show up at thrift stores, honestly. You can get spring-loaded sifters as well as the cranky variety. Based merely on function, I prefer the spring ones; if you're nostalgic, however, a crank one will work just fine.

Ahhhh memories. I can't tell you where to get one, but others have.
I just wanted to tell you that you have brought to mind those saturday afternoon cooking sessions where sifting the flour was my job.
"your children will love your cooking", mother would say. Sadly, I did not bake that way though I have had a wonderful life.

I know exactly what your talking about my grandma has one too, but i think the ones now have a handle that you sqeeze and release, instead of a crank, Try Target.

Sure, they still make sifters, tho I doubt they have wooden knobs, but plastic. Check any cooking or kitchen store.

They must still make them. I bought one 2 years ago at Zellers. I live in Canada.

There is a lot more baking done in small towns rather than the cities these days. The hardware stores in small towns carry them.
