I agree with some of the other answers; I think a lot of people around the world, not just Americans, are like this. As I see it, in terms of individual vanity, that can be explained by the fact that the United States was founded upon the value of the individual, etc., etc. In terms of nationalism, well, nationalism isn't all that uncommon, and there isn't necessarily anything wrong with it.

Ive been around, some on my own dime, and some on the govt dime in the military. Ive talked to alot of people in many countries during my travels. Most of the people i have talked to like America, not the government, but they do like the people. The ones that dont like the government and people must be the ones who tried to come here and were turned away at the gate. If the world hates America so much, tell everyone to stop trying to move here.

You must be French.
Yep the world would be better. Lets wrap up a 20th Century without the US.
Frances no longer exists as a result of WWI
The UK gets invaded for the first time since 1066 sometime in the 1920-30 time frame, and is conquered.
Japan takes over all of eastern Asia in 1930-40's killing 20 million or so.
German completes the Final Solution in the early 1950's, with all 30 million European Jews being solved.
The Soviet Union, and German-Italy start a new world war in the 1960's, with Germany causing devastating losses on the Soviets using their IRBM with the Nuclear warheads on them. The Soviets throw 20 million men at Germany to finally end in a draw in the 1970's with a total of ~50 million dead.
All the while the North and South America are continuily in conflict looking for dominance in the Americas.
But I'm sure the Mid-East is nice with the zealots peacefully beheading those who disagree with them and the world cares nothing of it.

I don't celebrate Valentines Day. If you think about it, it is a really f'd up holiday. Those with someone feel obligated and those without someone feel left out and alone. Messed up. My girlfriend and I just live and enjoy our life and not worry about such fluff. So, I guess we are really full of ourselves?

You use to the word "vanity" in relation to patriotism. Are the patriots the vain ones? Or are those who are so full of temselves and their ignorant propaganda, who preach, and lecture, on the evils of America the vein ones? You must be so "opressed" to pass such fiery judgement. Forgive me, if I think highly of those who protect my rights, and prevent Amreica's downfall. Vanity is everywhere, granted, but none so much as in the words and theories of people such as yourself. Think about your own statements. If Timothy Leary had his way we would all be taking lsd and "loving" on another. Is that arrogant? To think that one can change the minds of many through a manipulative sibstance? He, as you I presume share similar theories. Silly cowboys? Okay? Why would you make such a statement? Complete non-sence...dont quit your dayjob.

Sounds to me like you are the one(s) that are full of your selves. I think you mistake arrogance to Self confidence, Americans are a mixture of all people from around the globe. In this world we pretty much stand alone when anything with any intestinal fortitude is involved because people from other countries are to gutless to make any kind of move because they might say something wrong.
I'd rather be a "Arrogant Cowboy" than a "Gutless" person that just exists to badmouth us.

No... and actually most real Americans don't give a rats but what Brand-X 3rd world losers think of us. Nor do we care what Leftist sucking off of their government's social services think of us either... We also realize that if we weren't here protecting loser nations that are to cheap or wussy to fund their own protection that they would be living under some 3rd rate totalitarian despot. And we are getting fed up with all the ingrates... we just might vote in Ron Paul and pull all our protective troops home and let the ingrates fend for themselves
