I'm reading a book called Right Risk: Ten Powerful Principles for Taking Giant Leaps With Your Life by Bill Treasurer.
In the introduction, he talks about how risk-taking is essential for scientific progress, economic expansion, personal growth, career advancement, and spiritual development.
Your thoughts on this?
What risks have you taken in your life, and how did they pay off?

Excellent perspective, Pangel. You know, I think we are a lot more alike than I realized.

I walked out on an unfulfilling, emotionally empty marriage.
BEST move I ever made.
He has remarried and is very happy, I have remarried and am deliriously happy, and our kids say that instead of two unhappy parents they have four happy ones.
Risk taking is essential -- and really, unavoidable.
Pangel, you can call me "chicken"! (((Pangel)))

Except for the foolish regrettable kind, yes everyone must take risks in order to be truly living. You can never know your potential or meet the person of your dreams or find out you absolutely love frogs legs (eww lol) without any risks...
I am a risk taker. I see something or have a dream and I do my best to get it. Most times I succeed but that's more determination than anything I think lol... If I KNOW I can do something I do not stop trying until I actually DO it...

I highly doubt this author knows much about economics. The Fed and the European Bank are both pretty conservative in their monetary policies.
I'm not sure what risk-taking in scientific progress means. You need to collect evidence and that takes time. It's true you need some degree of creativity to make the next step, but I fail to see how this is "risky"

A questioning mind that passionately seeks truth, light, in no matter which lamp it shines, is to me as essential and normal to my life as breathing and eating.
One risk I have taken in life that has paid off in my quest for truth is selling everything I owned and moving to Asia half my life ago, rearing two children alone here, and building friendships and a community that spans the globe. These choices were challenging, but never felt very risky, however, just right.

Risk taking is essential in one's personal growth...HOWever, if that risk taking involves self destructive behavior or some form of action that goes against Bible principals, then another form of risk should be considered.
A recent risk I took that turned out with amazing results was moving myself and my children to the next province.

It is essential to a fulfilling life. Fear cannot control you. As dumb as this may sound I remember changing my outlook after watching the comedy "Defending Your Life" and realizing that I didn't want to be someone who restricted himself by his fears. I decided to err on the side of being bold.
In small ways: I've asked for every raise I've ever wanted (and gotten them). I also told my wife when we met that, "I think you need to begin seeing me"
Taking risks is a much better thing than living your life with unattempted regrets.
In all things be bold--those are my thoughts.

Yes, but I'm quite a gambler actually. With regards taking risks paying off, the biggest bet I have won to date paid out in excess of £3000, which is about $6000. Which was nice.

Yes, Binzi, life itself is a dangerous game. Pretty much everything one does has risk associated with it. Success isn't certain though, only death, and such is an inevitable consequence of life. Having said that, what reason does one have to NOT take risks in this life? :D

I think even as a child ... it is how we learn Linz
we take risks , we see what we are capable of and what we really shouldn't try again
I am one of those " dont call me chicken " type people
I am always up for a challenge
and I have proven to myself that I am much more capable than I realised in many ways
and as an adult , it has been a good survival technique

I think it is essential to take some risks.
Unfortunately, I'm quite meek and haven't really taken too many risks, except intellectual risks (and when those didn't pay off, it wasn't that bad).
