Hell is described as a bottomless pit (Luke 8:31, Revelation 9:1), and a lake of fire, burning with sulfur, where the inhabitants will be tormented day and night forever and ever (Revelation 20:10). In hell, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, indicating intense grief and anger (Matthew 13:42). It is a place “where the worm never dies and the fire never goes out” (Mark 9:48).

No. Hell is merely mankind's common grave. The original Hebrew and Greek words words for hell ... Sheol and Hades ... merely mean "the pit" or something similiar.

Beagle: Respectfully, think about it. You just gave a reasoning point against it being a place of literal fire. Satan is said to be in charge of hell. Why then would the bible say that HE is being tormented in it?

The Bible talks about the fires of hell...whether it is literal or not is a topic of debate, though many people seem to treat it as if it is literal.

Personally, I think physical death is the separation of the soul from the body, and spiritual death is the separation of the soul from God.

According to the Bible, if you aren't a believer, you will go to hell. I don't know about you, but total separation from God sounds much worse than fire to me, if God is truly all loving, all powerful, all knowing, etc., as the Bible teaches.

Therefore, I tend to believe that the "fire" bit is probably symbolic, and was just a way for Jesus to describe in terms we could better understand in our finite knowledge and experiences how much hell would...well, suck. :)

But who knows...I could be wrong.

No it does not. The Bible is translated from Hebrew and has been taught falsely. In Hebrew, hell actually means grave, or Sheol.

Since it says that satan and his crowd are tormented in it forever and that human sinners are consumed in it, I would guess that it does say that there is a literal fire.
