As a daughter of a retired minister, I believe that ministers (in terms of taxes) are considered an employee of the church, and therefore do pay taxes. However, the church is a non-profit organization and therefore does not have to pay taxes.

However, I continually hear that ministers pay no taxes...if you are a minister, can you answer this question?

Church income is not taxable because a church is a non-profit. It must follow certain IRS rules to maintain this status. Ministers who are paid a salary must report the income However, sometimes certain church members give the minister gifts that are not for services rendered -- these are generally not taxable. I also believe that there are certain denominations that provide a manse (living quarters). I believe that is not a taxable item. Members of religious communities who are not paid a salary (the salary for services may be paid to the community), do not have an income. Their food, clothing, living quarters, is provided by the community.

Some, but not all, of a minister's salary is tax-exempt. It may vary from state to state or there might be federal laws concerning that -- I don't recall.
