While self-immolation has precedent, it is not supported by Buddhist teachings.

"""A number of Buddhist monks (including Thích Quảng Đức) self-immolated in protest of the discriminatory treatment endured by Buddhists under the authoritarian administration of President Ngô Đình Diệm in South Vietnam — even though violence against oneself is prohibited by most interpretations of Buddhist doctrine."""
On a different vein, think of the control of your mind you'd need in order to do such. Your mind is capable of many things, even blocking out the utmost pain, if trained correctly.

Nirvana. Nirvana is the state of being loose from suffering. that's an important concept in Buddhism and Jainism. The Buddha defined nirvana as a results of fact the suitable peace of the approach that's loose from yearning, anger and different afflictive states (kilesas). the undertaking is at peace with the worldwide, has compassion for all and provides up obsessions and fixations. This peace is accomplished whilst the present volitional formations are pacified, and the circumstances for the manufacturing of recent ones are eradicated. In Nibbana the inspiration reasons of yearning and aversion have been extinguished such that one is no longer undertaking to human suffering (dukkha) or further states of rebirths in samsara.

Sounds like a protest of some sort.
Reminds me of the man that burned himself in front of the White House as a protest to the Vietnam war.

Actually, Buddhism accepts self-immolation. it's done as a protest either against wars, political leaders, authority etc... It's an effective way of getting into people's hearts (while they still have it!).

I heard a story earlier this year about a Buddhist monk who chopped his penis off because he got an erection during meditation

I have never heard of a Buddhist monk doing this unless it was to protest a terrible injustice. Buddhism does not condone suicide.
