A piece of ice fell off my roof the other day and happened to catch my ten year old golden retriever in the hip/leg. He has been dragging his legs and will not stand up without me lifting up his rear end first. And even then, he only saunters for a max of five feet. With it being directly after the holidays, what is the best thing I can do for him until I have the money to take him into the vet after the new year?

EDIT: To answer the seven responses that are, "Take him to the vet you broke bastard". For one, it's after business hours right now; I also live one hour from the vet so that's really a moot point. For two, he's ten years friggin' old. That's seventy in dog years! I am positive he did NOT break his hip, he is NOT in any serious danger of losing his mobility. If he did have a serious break of his hip or foot, he wouldn't be walking on it at all; even if propped or prodded into it. If anyone of you took a fraction of the time to read through the question as you did preparing your responses, I may have not wasted my time.

I would probably call his vet they sometimes have an emergency phone # for questions and or where to take him if he is in pain and cannot walk. If not then just let him take it easy maybe rub it a bit if he lets you and tell him he will be allright as soon as vet opens let them know what happened. Good Luck, all will be ok.

Think of it this way...
If you had a hip injury but were low on money, how would you feel if someone said, well, I know you're in pain, but you have to wait till after New Year's to go to the doctor.

Your vet may well be willing to make payment arrangements.
You can talk to your local humane office or rescue group to see if you can get some financial assistance.

The dog sounds like he's got a serious injury, possibly a broken hip, and you want him to wait a week or more? If it starts healing wrong it'll cost a LOT MORE to re-break it to re-set it.

You're dog has been hurt in an accident and you're gonna wait until you've got some money to have him treated by a vet? Thats not the reaction or response of a animal lover, borrow the bloody money or take him anyway - they won't turn you away once you're there! He's an old man and has given you tons of love and affection, does he not deserve the same in return, especially when he's in pain and discomfort?

If you can't afford the vet bills then you shouldn't have a dog. Call you mom and ask for some money. It may be broken, and if the bones set wrong he could be crippled with pain for the rest of her life. If it were your child would you have waited so long? Most vets are willing to work out a payment plan for you if you can't afford it right away. They hate seeng a pet suffer--especially of poverty.

There isn't one...he needs to see a vet. If you have a vet you've been using for a long time, chances are they will make payment arrangements for you if you ask them when you call for the appointment. They are in the business for a reason...because they love animals, and I'm sure you love your dog...so, get him to a vet asap.
