I am from the US and will be in Melbourne, Australia for 2 weeks, then off to New Zealand. Friends have suggested the South Island for great hiking. Also, I was told I should take the ferry from the North to the South Island, because it's pretty breathtaking. Any suggestions on where to go and where to stay?

Kaiteriteri, Marahau and Abel Tasman would be my best bet - spent years there myself. See Kaiteriteri (about an hour from Nelson) then take a short drive to Marahu (20 mins) - the start of the Abel Tasman National Park.

A must to walk the track, you can even kayak down there or water taxi, or walk one way and water taxi back. http://www.aquataxi.co.nz At the end of the track is Awaroa Lodge - stay the night, otherwise you will regret it, a MAGIC place http://www.awaroalodge.co.nz - Gorgeous place . . .and must see !!!!

http://www.motueka.com Offers a booking service for activities, accommodation and transport in Tasman and Golden Bay

If you take a look at the official Nelson tourism website http://nelsonnz.com it has listing for activities and accommodation for Nelson, Golden Bay, Abel Tasman etc for heaps of options.

Another place is Marlborough / Picton – The Sounds - http://www.destinationmarlborough.com

The ferry to Wellington >Picton is great on a nice day. Lost count how many times I have been on that ferry over the years!

Franz Joseph Glacier for some day hiking on ice! - http://www.franzjosefglacier.com
Wanaka – Hike around the Lake Wanaka - http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz/index.cfm/Home

Have a great trip.

Hiking (or tramping, as they call it) is pretty much the national sport in New Zealand (after rugby). Undoubtedly the South Island. There are many walks of various lengths all along the Southern Alps. Arthurs Pass, Milford, Te Anau, Wanaka and Queenstown on the east (dry) side of the range. Fox, Hokitika, Franz Josef and Greymouth on the wet west coast.

An alternative to crossing Cook Strait on the ferry is to get a boat tour out of Picton, at the north end of the South Island. They do not go out into the strait, but follow the Marlborough Sound which is the route the ferry takes once it leaves the Strait.

Take the Ferry from Wellington to Picton. costs about $65 they have 3 or 4 sailings daily. Pick up a hire car and head to Nelson Or a camper van if you want to take your accommodation with you. Drive around Queen Charlotte sounds on your way through to Nelson . Takes about 2 hours to Nelson then another Hour or less through Motueka to Kaiteriteri .[Beautiful. ] You can then hike the Able tasman National Park. then with your car drive down South Via the West Coast through Franze Joseph and Fox glacier on to Queenstown . you can pick up leaflets and the people will tell you where all the walking tracks are. Milford Sounds Awesome but there is just loads of places you can hike. Hope you are going soon in Summer or early Autumn ps Rob C has it wrong Cradle Mountain is not in NZ. It is in Tasmania
