Hey there!!
I used to learn the piano when i was a kid. And when my teacher got married and moved away, I started self-learning the guitar. After a year i got formal guitar lessons. In my opinion, learning the guitar by yourself is easier.
Yes you're right. People can can books and stuff for guitar. It's really easy. I've tried looking up piano lessons online for free and there isnt much.
Piano is a harder instrument to self-learn because you need to know the positions and you really need someone to be there explaining then to you where as the guitar you can just get chord charts and it tells you the fingering and everything!
So in my opinion, guitar is easier to self-learn! :D
Good luck!

These days you can learn how to play guitar over the internet. Check out Mark McKenzie's guitar video lessons here: http://www.jamoramaguitar.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced guitar players. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine.
I was able to improve my skills in just under 4 weeks and I am an intermediate-to-advanced guitar player; I've been playing guitar for the past 6 years and I was on stage with my band a lot of times.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a pro guitar teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me. Good luck!

I've taught myself to play both instruments, and in my humble opinion, piano would probably be the easiest to learn on your own. Here's my reasoning -- to me, the piano is much more of a visual instrument and much easier to see that. Yes, I know the guitar is, too, but the piano is built in a more-or-less chromatically straight line. Yah, the guitar is, too, but there are six strings, meaning six chromatic lines.
Also, I believe the kinesthetics (the feel, such as in the "fingerings" on a piano/guitar [especially when dealing with chords]) feel a slight bit more "natural" (maybe a better word would be ergonomic).
On top of that, it's probably easier to play longer (aka stamina) on a keyboard because you don't have continuous pressure from a very thin metal wire (although, this usually diminishes after developing callouses).
Lastly, you don't have to tune a piano nearly as often as you do a guitar (esp. if you have an electric keyboard -- however, once you DO have to tune a piano, it's coniderably harder and more work).
Again, these are just personal prefferences and ideas. Hope it helps. :D

No matter what instrument you choose, the first one will always be the hardest because you're starting from scratch. You have to learn hand independence, reading music, and learning about music in general.
You can teach yourself how to play any instrument. I suggest, since this is your first instrument, that you get private instructions until you're off the ground and moving with your study.
