I think you are giving 90% of theists too much credit.

I have had a lot of doubt through the years. The first began when I was young about 11. That night I had a dream about Jesus. He spoke to me about my troubles at school and home. The next day I felt like 100 pound was lifted. As I became older I had some medical problems and sometimes would stay awake for 2-3 days from pain. One evening I prayed and prayed for a break I was so tired...then all of a sudden my body loosened up and my mind was at complete peace, I finally fell asleep. When I woke up 14 hours later I remembered praying and how much better I felt. The last thing is I was reading the bible and thought to myself that God hated women. I was so mad at him because the bible said some things I didn't agree with...I was woken up at 5am with a coughing fit. I couldn't stop. I got up to get some water, felt better and tried to go back to sleep, didn't work...I started coughing again! So I decided to watch tv instead. I turned it on and didn't have to change the channel. The show was called Amazing Women Of God...(I think). So to me these are not coincidental. I prayed and he answered.

I'm still o the first step, I'm still to convinced that we can know enough about a higher power to try to define it clearly enough to for the concept of a specific deity. But I do believe that many people skipped the first step.

I skiped the first step, and basically I prayed the sinners prayer as a test. I was surprised when after praying that, I started to feel hope and found myself seeing things in a new light.
