I'm sick of it. I'm sick of the genetic health problems they continue breeding. I'm tired of having to take in litters of puppies people left at the front of my salon and bottle feed them. I'm tired of going to animal control every week and seeing how many dogs are going to die at the hands of backyard breeding. I sick of people not spaying/neutering then having litters and giving them away and they end up in animal testing or dog fighting. WHy is it so hard to just breed responsibly?
So I put this question forth. Backyard breeders, can you please explain yourself to me and all the rescue workers and animals control officers who have to clean up your mess? Was it worth that money you probably spent through in a week? Was it worth 17 million dogs dieing because of you? Do you really not care that the dogs you breed end up terribly sick, and even euthanized? Do you not care about taking homes from potential rescue dogs? Please, explain to me so I can feel a little better.

And to the buyers of these dogs. Was getting the dog a little cheaper worth the risk of thousand of dollars of health problems later in life that you probably won't pay to fix anyway? Or was it worth the terrible treatment of the parents who are locked up all day, never receive vet care, and die because of over breeding? Do you like poor quality dogs that don't meet breed standards and have shady temperaments? Please, tell me :-(

Well I suppose you all were right. In a perfect world, we could make all of the backyard breeder (and puppymillers) this and hope maybe we could get a change.
Funny how we get postings everyday asking backyard breeding information and buying from puppy mills, but now when they are questioned the room falls silent. The only thing I know we all can agree on is that it has to stop, and I applaud you all for your efforts in stopping this unethical practice!!

wow: the reason we "can't do anything" is because of people like you. People who think that treating an animal ethically is obsessing over it. But I think we are doing something, and honestly you didn't answer the question so why did you even post a response? Are you a byb?

wow: many big things have happened in my life and I am ever so thankful for them. But i stand by my initial statement that it is people like you. Some people obsess over themselves, theirs kids, alcohol, money. I think the people who responded here aren't obsessing over anything, but they are standing up for what's right. I also believe if they felt that children were being done wrong they would stand up for them just as strongly. You do not have to dedicate your life to one issue, you can stand up everything you believe in. At the end of the day, we know we've achieved something if only one mind is changed.
You have lost interest in the issue, that's fine, but please just leave animals alone. If kids are the ONLY place your heart is, then quit the shelter and dedicate every living breathing second to them.

AMEN!!!!!!
Responsible breeders help to clean up the messes left behind by these people. The breeder I'm visiting right now has 5 rescues in her kennel waiting for new homes. And I frequently take in Bassets that are no longer wanted because they were sold to people that should never have been allowed to buy them in the first place and the BYB won't take them back.
BTW - I can pretty much guarantee that NONE of the BYBs that frequent this site will answer your question.

I totally agree with you! This past summer/fall, animal control broke up a puppy mill, they now have over 300 dogs from that puppy mill and some of the dam's are waiting to give birth tha last I heard. The Buxton 300, as they are called, has already eaten up 1/3 of their budget for the year and all the animals have either medical, behavioral, and or emotional problems. So many of the problems are gentic too! It is just devestating. I mean what were these people thinking?!?! Search J'aime Kennels or Buxton 300 Maine and you will see what I am talking about. These dogs are expensive to take care of, have a lot of problems which makes them harder to adopt and places like this take money away from the regular dogs that need their help. It just disgusts me that people could do something like this. I too would like to what exactly made this a worthwhile venture, destorying animals lives, not socializing them, having them born already sick so you can sell them to an unsuspecting buyer, just to make some money?

Good luck getting anyone to answer.
There's a lady I met at the dog park. Sweet dogs, but at least 2 are backyard-bred for sure. (She has three, and I can't tell with the littlest one.) One's a Siberian Husky/Samoyed mix. He's a beautiful dog, full of energy and such - but the other dog breaks my heart. She's a two-year-old Newfoundland that is pretty small. She wasn't as small as I made her out to be in a recent question, but explaining that she was the runt is still a little off. Apparently both her parents' hips were fine, but she's got hip dysplasia at age 2. She's had it since she was a puppy. It breaks my heart to watch her try to chase my two-year-old dog, but she stops before it hurts her. She's a very sweet dog, and looks a lot like a Newfoundland to the untrained eye, but I don't think she's that great of a contributor to the breed. These dogs are fine as pets, it just makes me sad that this lady bought them. Oh, this Newfie doesn't like to swim either. The reason? She saw two of her littermates fall through ice on a lake and drown. What kind of breeder lets puppies on ice like that? I know that accidents happen, and maybe I'm overprotective, but still. It's so sad.

You must be my secret twin. I have these same thoughts every day. Good for you for voicing them!
Wow-I will respond to you. You sound very jaded and uncaring, and I would suggest you quit the volunteering, as your heart is no longer in the right place. If you no longer feel that saving lives and educating the public on responsible pet ownership is not important, you NEED to do the shelter you volunteer for a big favor and walk. If you were in my group, I would get you kicked out-they don't need your negative attitude or indifference.
Wow: Believe me, you are doing the shelter NO favors with your horrible attitude. You obviously dont care about the dogs, so why do you bother? Go spend your time on the things you think are important and leave the rest of us to the things we think are important. And yes, there would be a BIG clash, but the people in my group would feel as I do and would ask you to leave the group. Are you one of those people who just volunteers so you can brag about it to your friends? You are not needed, honey. And yes, I would definitely prefer the company of any animal to yours. I prefer people who have hearts and souls. You ARE the problem, whether you like being told that or not. You do not belong on the dog forum. Go spend your time in the family section.

Actually, as far as the 'Wow' thing goes, it isn't something anyone can 'get over' since it affects all of us even if you or JQP are too dim to realize it. We pay millions upon millions of dollars in taxes each year to care for the cast off dogs from these back yard greeders and puppy millers - to collect, care for, euthanize and dispose of their millions of bodies... so even if you don't care about the animals suffering from their ignorant greeding, realize that it does affect even non-animal lovers. It can and will affect all of us at some point in time when the ARs have gotten their ultimate goal realized and no one can own a companion animal any longer-- not that distant into the future... there are frequent attempts at legislation all across the country and world to achieve this ultimate goal and they have actually made a lot of headway in many European countries and will continue to do so with complacency and the same sort of 'get over it' attitude you express. I am as cynical as anyone but I am not as foolish as you -- 'cleaning up after back yard greeders' isn't just some nonsensical BS - it is reality and it costs cities/counties millions and if you think that sort of expenditure will go without attempts to curtail it, think again. It isn't about just knowing that there is little we can do education-wise with these people and those that support them through purchase -- I know that and most people who have been involved in dogs for any length of time are well aware of it and it does make us a bit cynical but it doesn't make us blind and stupid as it seems to have made you.... It actually IS places like YA and various forums that will reach the reachable -- there are those that never will be and you just have to hope they fall by the wayside eventually but it is the, albeit rare, reachable person that makes the difference at some point - the heretofore impulsive purchaser that might actually reconsider and think twice before supporting through purchase these bygers/pms the next time they are deciding to get a dog -- little headways but better than cowing to them and just deciding that all is lost so just let the greeders and millers take over and end up making those of us that DO care loose our right to have a companion animal... Yes, it is sickening to deal with these greeders/millers products but if we just roll over and die then we might as well join the ARs and eliminate all companion animals ... and just get used to not having any dogs, cats, horses, birds, gold fish, whatever...

Quote from Wow: "Oh get over it!"
I will not. If I don't preach it, who will? If I don't speak up, who will? I can rely on no one except myself. I cannot pawn it off to Basset or DP or MuttMommy or Sophy. I have to speak up. Why don't you? Sure, 99 times out of 100 it makes no difference, but that one time it does. . .
And, what about the people that you educate who don't speak up? The people who read our posts because they wanted a Teacup Chihuahua or were going to buy a lab from the newspaper or who had a check ready to send to a breeder on puppyfinder - and then changed their mind.
Even if I change the mind of only one person, that's potentially thousands of puppies that won't be born because of me. To me, that's worth it and I will not "get over it".

As far FTS's question, yes, I am tired of cleaning up after BYB's. Mostly because it seems that for everyone I clean up for, 7 more show up. And each time we educate a generation, the next generation shows up and wants to emmulate Paris Hilton. But, I won't give up.
I post my BYB questionairre ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlZdVI8VZULtP_UJE.CifVrsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071228094106AA4sFJ7 ) as often as I can verify a BYB, yet not a single time has it been answered. But again, if it makes one person think twice, then it's worth it.

amen to that.
Backyard breeders don't have hearts or brains, just greed.
here is my definition~
don't get their dogs health screened, at all.
do it for money.
don't really give a dern where the dogs end up.
don't care about the overpopulation.
here is mine for good breeders~
get their dogs health screened(every year is best, but not nesscessary in my book)
follow the pups to the new homes
give people pedigrees, vacine records, puppy starter kit, etc.
love the breed and does it for improving the bloodline
there is only one thing below BYBs. PUPPY MILLERS!

I am right there with you on this subject matter.
I believe dogs should only be breed to improve the breeds standards for show, conformation, trials, etc. Needless to say not all the pups qualify to be of show quality, so these pups should be on limited registration or be neurtered or spayed.

Unfortunately, the people who really need to understand how bad backyard breeding is - will likely never get it. You will always get the same stupid answer that "my dog's puppies will all go to good homes", with no thought about the longterm or big picture about what they are doing.
Sigh.

Preach it, my brotha! In some ways, I am very glad of Yahoo Answers and a lot of these idiots. It's opened my eyes to the completely moronic pet owners out there so I'll be more prepared (and maybe more patient) by the time I am a vet.
