I usually only hear this claim from the more ultra-conservative branches of Christianity, but for heaven's sake, every single bit of information I can find on the web from Wikipedia onwards includes catholics as Christians. In fact many state they are the original Christians. I struggle to understand...is this just hatred and bigotry?

PS. I should include that I was raised catholic, saw bibles in all the pews, and prayed to the triune God.

Yes, it's bigotry and hatred of anything that doesn't fall into one's narrow scope of mind or interpretation of religion and the bible.

Catholics are Christians - regardless of what anyone says.

It's a matter of doctrine (Bible truth). Catholics are a whole other thing when it comes to what they believe, whereas Christians (of whatever protestant denomination) happen to hold to a specific list of Bible doctrine concerning Christ, God, the Holy Spirit, the 2 ordinances of the church(baptism and the Lord's Super), the birth, death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Whether Methodist, Baptist, etc. there is agreement on the basic statement of faith. All doctrine within the Christian church comes directly from the Holy Bible and no other source is recognized as God's Holy Word. There's just a lot of differences between Christians and Catholics....too many to list. Hope this helps.

While now not all Christians are Catholic, all Catholics are Christians. Catholicism is the major denomination of Christianity. It is correct to name one's self a Catholic Christian. One can't be Catholic with out being a Christian. They are one within the identical. Your buddy's reaction is difficult. Perhaps it used to be a apparently deficient strive to distinguish your buddy's denomination from the others. But to mention Catholicism isn't now not Christian is grossly erroneous. Usually, any such declare comes from erroneous Protestants. This is the primary time I've heard of it coming from a Catholic!

Its hatred for another religion that dates back to the times of the Romans, the Romans were originally primarily catholics, until another form of Christianity arose and took over the society and (cant recall who the ruler was at the time) the emperor at the time had everyone who refused to convert from Catholic executed, and to this very day, those who don't not practice what the religion is supposed to really stand for express hatred and bigotry towards each other, Catholics hating other forms of Christianity and vise versa.
Its sad because they worship the same god and the same Jesus.

I wouldn't call it hatred or bigotry, it is just ignorance. I was raised in a pretty conservative Christian environment and the reasone that I was told was that the Catholic church worshipped more than God, because they pray to saints and the Virgin Mary. This, according to them, was in violation of the Holy Scripture.

I have no idea who Catholics pray to, but if the religion is centered around Jesus being the Messiah, then it would have to be considered Christian in my view. I no longer follow the church because of the very ignorance found in many many other views that they have besides this one. This particular church and many other of the conservative branches tend to pass judgment and make arguments based on ignorant interpretation of the Bible without ever actually educating themselves on the people that they pass judgment on.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If being a Catholic is what is right for you, and you feel comfortable with your beliefs, then that is what is important. Blessed Be!

EDIT>>>They also tend to pick and choose verses without seeing the whole picture. You cannot go by John 1: 42 without looking at Matthew 16: 16-19:

16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

And anyone who has actually read anything about the history of Popes knows that the Church went back through history and named people who would have been Popes, had the position actually existed then. Peter was never given the title or position of Pope in his lifetime, as it did not yet exist. He was given it later as an honorary title due to the life he lived, his relationship with Jesus, and the fact that he was martyred. It would have been impossible for the man to be a hypocrite for not following laws for a position that did not yet exist. That is ridiculous.

Also the guidelines that were written out for church leaders were modified later for the Catholic church within the church itself due problems that existed because of priests and their families. They decided it was better for the church as a whole if the leaders were 100% dedicated to God. Don't see how that was wrong, neccessarily.

Because so many of their doctrines and practices are not only unbiblical, but are in fact contrary to what the Bible teaches. I like Catholics but I do not believe that their church system is good. "By their fruits ye shall know them", after all. It was not my anabaptist forebears who martyred people who wouldn't accept their teachings.....it was the Catholics. It is a corrupt church. Read the Bible and then read the Church catechism and you will realize that they are way off the mark scripturally.

There are significant differences between Christian and Catholic doctrine. However, pointing out the differences does not get to the real matter.

Christian is to be Christlike, to have faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

You can say you are Christian, Protestant, or Catholic and not have a relationship with Christ.

Continuing with the real matter at hand, the Non believers are simply enjoying and exploiting the subject matter.

I believe Catholics are Christians and that is what I know from
my own Catholic friends. No Protestant friends told me that
Catholics are NOT Christians.

Catholic, Protestant, Sunni, Shia, Brahmin, Jain, Sikh are all
man made and no prophet separated them, like the man the
politic idiotic cult and religious leaders....directed based on
power and authority.

Probably for the same reason many Catholics do not consider Protestants to be fellow believers.

Those who are more focused on their religion than they are on their relationship with their Savior love to say who is and not Christian among the faithful.

Perhaps because of the veneration of saints, and of Mary. Most Christians think this is quite taboo.
