when reporting my jeep stolen the police can't complete the report because the vin# does not go with the vehicle i purchased. they say it's a bum #. The dealership insists it is correct. It is the same # on the title paperwork issued from the state of MO, on the car fax ect.. But some thief is riding around in my '06 jeep and the police can't do anything. Please tell me the sale was illegal!!!!

I would bet that somehow the vin is being entered wrong! If you send me the VIN (e mail do not post it here) I will check to see that goes to a 2006 Jeep! I would bet they read a B as an 8 or an O as an 0.

Contact the supervisor on duty at your police department of the state police. If you have a copy of the title, insist that a report be written!

It is only illegal if it was done intentionally. The DMV should have caught it when you or the dumb dealership registered it, but all the dealer has to say is that it was a mistake and they didn't know. I once bought a car and the VIN# was wrong on the title. I found out several months later when I tried selling the car and was making a bill of sale. I took the VIN # off the car and it did not match the title. It was off by one letter/number (can't remember). I had to go to the dmv and get a new title with the correct VIN#, but there was nothing illegal about it, since all someone has to say is it was a mistake and they did no. You know, "we all make mistakes, nobody is perfect." But yes without the VIN# your truck could be easily sold to someone else and you won't see it again. However, Police should have a Plate # to go by. This reminds of my friend several months ago, his mom towed his car, because she hates him, but before she did it, she took off his plates and the tow truck took it. My friend tried making a police report but they couldn't do anything because when they looked in their computer to see all the vehicles that were towed in the city, (in my city, each time a tow truck towes a car, they have to put it in this database or something with the plates number, they don't go by VIN #) they could not locate his car, because the tow guy didn't put anything in the database, because his mom took the plates off the car and the tow guy didn't register it in the database. Then few months later, his mom finally told him the tow comapny, and when he went, they told him that his vehicle was auctioned off! Still cops couldn't do anything!

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

You need to talk to a lawyer. If the dealer says it's right and the title lists that number I don't see how it could be wrong. However if the cops say it is then I'd talk to a lawyer about going after the dealer especially if it's a used vehicle. That type of mixup shouldn't happen on a new one but some shady used dealers may try to scam you. That's why it pays to verify the VIN yourself before you sign the paperwork.
