Rats are fantastic pets. They have very little odor if properly cared for, and are affectionate, intelligent little critters. Rats live best in colony's as they are social animals, so it would be best if you had at least two rats of the same sex. Though you intend to spend time playing with your rat, it needs a friend for when you can't be there.
Female rats are energetic and fun. They will keep you entertained with their antics. However left to their own devices can get into mischief. Males are much calmer, and will happily sit on your lap while you watch TV and just snuggle. Think lap dog.
Rats can be trained to come to their names and with patience learn to do various tricks.
Rats are easily cared for, and readily available.
You would be best to obtain your rats from a breeder, who can offer you assistance in caring for your new pets, and can make your first experience with owning rats a good one.
Your rats will be socialized already if you buy from a reputable breeder.
Most local animal society's have rats available for adoption, but be sure you know what you are getting. Often animals adopted from shelters and humane society's are in need of extra care and attention/socializing.

My 7 yr. old daughter has two pet rats and they are very good. But I would suggest researching them before purchasing/adopting.You have to know the type of dwelling, the right type of food to feed them, there is a lot to research. We have had two pet rats for our daughter since June 2007 and we are still learning everyday. Good Luck

they are not a pet for everyone.. but some people do find them to be really good pet.. low maintence..and all. if you can hold it in the store and feel that you would like one for a pet.. they cost very little to buy.. and food and all is cheap.. i would say go for it.. remember they do not live as longs as a dog or cat.. or even a bird.. but birds will out live a dog or cat.. some will any ways.. I had a pet rat.. get a baby.. i got a grown one and it was pregant.. and i found out when i got home one day.. a few weeks later .. those little critters got out of the cage .. and i found them every where.. even my underware drawer..lol

Although I've never owned a rat, I've always heard that they're good pets.

yes rats are the most awesome pets ever! It is best if you get them as young as possible though. It will be more attached to you that way.

My friend had a couple of white mice as pets, but they produced babies at such a fast rate that she got fed up with them and gave them away. If you are planning to keep only one rat as a pet, I think it'll make a good one..

Yes they are great! I have 2 and they get attached to you, smart, and inexpensive! They are like a cat or dog too. They are nothing like mice or hamsters.

Yes! Much better than mice, hamsters, gerbils, etc. - more intelligent and more people friendly.

Yes I have 2, they don't bite, they get atached to you like a dog or cat does, and they love to ride on your shoulder. but get a female because males pee every where they got and make sure to have stuff for them to chew on!
