I am not a educated in religious aspects other than the minimum
needed to be one.
From what I know(correct me if I am wrong), that Prophet
Mohammed was an illiterate and was not able to read or write.
He was able to recite the verses with help of Angel Gabriel.
Hence all the Quran verses are recited and many memorize.
Even when he died, I am not sure he was a literate but he was
a honest person and hence all tribal people used to come to
him for resolve their differences and solve problems. His
honesty was present even before he became a prophet at the
age of 40.
I am sure he knew about Jesus as it was a tradition to know
about the other prophets including Adam, Abraham, to Moses
to Jesus. Many versus in the Quran are mentioned. In fact
the name of Jesus and Moses is mentioned more than
Mohammad himself in the Quran.

No he didn't die illiterate ..he didn't hear of Jesus prior to getting his enlightenment ..If he had heard about it he wouldn't be much shocked seeing the angle appearing to him at least he could understand it a little...after the appearance of the angle his wife (he had only one wife at that time) took him to one of her cousins who was a scholar in Christianity and he told him this angle is from God and he will be a prophet.. that guy was very old at that time and died shortly after this incident .

well frist of all are you talking about the prophets and if so then As you know Prophet Muhammad (saws) was an illilerate man. some mircales in the Quran.

Sal Allah hu sallam may be illiterate but he was guided by Gibrael & he is aware of the time, Jesus's arrival.

he was part deaf on the right hand side as well as having tunnel vission, the poor man couldn't read or write and when they went to tell him of jesus they all new of his inpedament and stood on his right so he couldn't hear but they went home feeling good with themselves that they did tell him
there is something in that for all of us
