Penal life is highly regulated. 6 counts a day. Meals are at preset times. You, your property and your cell are searched on a regular and irregular basis for contraband. Obviously, there is no freedom of movement. Passes issued to go anywhere. Shower times, med calls, rec times and phone calls are set and if you disregard rules, you are responsible for your actions ( or lack there of). When you deal with a segment of society that doesnt like to follow rules, regulations and laws, every action is watched more closely. I hope this helps in your understanding.

Nothing on t.v. exemplifies it. It's like military camp without the derrogatory language from the staff as I observed in the five years of working in a med/max prison. The days are structured for wake up & lights out, meals and work assignments. The inmates keep the peace contrary to the myth that a few guards do, because it makes their time go easier.

However bad you might imagine it to be, the reality is many times worse. When I first became a Police Officer I had to spend a week working in the county jail and I thought that was pretty awful, state prison makes that seem like an all expenses paid vacation.

It depends what yard you get sent to. Its obviously worse than jail since youre dealing with hardcore convicts. Id say 80% of people in prison dont even belong in society and should be locked up. But prison sucks no matter what...

Well I don't know about prison but los angeles county jail is not nice. Never been there but I've read it is way overcrowded, inmates are sleeping on the floors in th bathrooms. There's disease everywhere, inmates are getting staph infections.

This "superbug," known as methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), has the power to disable, disfigure and kill the people who come into contact with it.
