Walk. Walk a lot, walk at a comfortable pace then walk faster. Then go looking for hills and walk them.

I am much like you. I started walking and now I do 2 miles a day at lunch and on the weekends, I try to do 12 miles hiking in the foothills.

Swimming is the best exercise for not causing damage to your joints. I would also try a stationary bike.

Have your doctor give you a referral to physical therapy. They can teach you exercises that will keep you fit while protecting your knees.
