There are no laws that say you can't wear a bullet proof vest. Anyone can purchase them. On line or from a police supply. I don't know anyone that would want to wear one on a daily basis. If the vest is of good quality usually rated at a IIIA, to stop large caliber pistol rounds, and some rifle rounds. They are thick, bulky, heavy, hot, and uncomfortable. I know I used to have to wear one 8 hours a day. I only did it because the badge made such a good target.

They are legal for all civilians to possess, except those who have been convicted of a felony (California Penal Code 31360). However, it is up to you to check your municipal codes, though I doubt they would conflict with state law. You do not need a special license to purchase them. In fact you can walk into your local gun show, pay the nice man, and walk out with them in less than 10 minutes (a smart choice if you're buying heavy rifle plates since you save on shipping).

In Maryland, it is legal to purchase, own and wear personal body armour. It is, however, illegal to wear body armour in the commision of a crime and will result in additional charges and a more severe sentence. Got that straight from an assistant state's atty.

To be on the safe side, take no ones ideas on this, find out for yourself, from the MARYLAND STATE POLICE.
Being as how they are the main people enforcing, they should know if & where it is legal to wear.

They are perfectly Legal. However, if you were to live in an area where they are not, It is best to just wear the vest and then worry about it after you get shot and you don't die.

Go with RW's advise. Where I live it is completely illegal to wear one, if not also to even own one, unless you are a police officer, in the military, etc.

You have to check state to state. I believe that California made it illegal to own one.
