When I got a stress fracture I couldn't do any impact things while it healed, so I used an elliptical to keep up my training. While it uses slightly different muscles (making it a good cross training workout) it still worked my legs out great. After two weeks when I could run again, my legs were still in great shape, but my lungs were terrible, because the elliptical doesn't "work" them very much. So make sure to include some hard cardio (a little more than jump rope) into your workouts!!

Also, I used the elliptical for 30-60 minutes, and would either do "hills" on it or "intervals". Hills is obvious, but for intervals this is what I'd do: (mine had a program for intervals) choose a mid setting for resistance, I usually chose 6-8. Then for two minutes I would "sprint" (go as fast as you can) at this resistance. Then I'd switch it to the highest resistance, (like extreme hill climbing) and go for 2 minutes at a "fast walk/hiking" type pace. I called that 1 set. After 1 set I'd switch directions (it works your hamstrings) and repeat. I'd just keep repeating and switching directions for 30-60 minutes.

I was only on this "program" for two weeks though, so I don't know about long term affects. But I do know that I was back to my normal running very quickly, in fact my legs/muscles never suffered, and my speed only suffered because I my lungs were "out of shape." So i'd say try to run at least 4 times a week (long run, hill run, sprint run, and tempo/easy run) and use the elliptical and jumpe rope as a great cross-training workout on the other 3 days!!

it doesnt work the same muscles, however it will help you with endurance....most serious runners tend to dislike the elliptical because it doesnt feel "normal" at least to wat they are used to.....to increasing speed try running workouts and some lifting
