my family went for the first time skiing and snowboarding this past week - we had such a great time
my 6 year old boys took skiing leasons and my 8 year old daughter did snowboarding
they all loved it so I'm sure we will be back soon

how many lessons do you think they would need before they are good enough to go down the smallest trail by themself

At the age you mentioned, I would not let them just go ski alone down a trail. Ski with them, so they don't get lost, or injured.
If they can turn both ways and stop under control on a moderate beginners slope then I would let them ski down some runs under supervision. If they had only one lesson, send them back to the same instructor, and ask for him by name. After the lesson ask the instructor for their opinion about the kids skiing which trails on their own.
If you ski with them down some of the children's trails, allow for your larger body mass and longer skiis. This is one reason that most children's instructors are not real large people. I'm 6' and 220, if I follow a children's trail, I'm ducking branches, and twisting all over the hill to avoid bumps and holes.
As to how many lessons, at least 3 is probably a good guess, more maybe. Enjoy the sport, rent your equipment the first few times, fit your boots tight, snug on the kids, and shop the sales this spring for your own equipment. Children's equipment should be rented or purchased used with the aid of an experienced skier, unless you are very, very rich. Enjoy our sport.

They should be fine for that after 2 or 3 lessons.

But kids should have a lot of lessons, particularly if the hill has specialist child instructors. A lot of skiing is unnatural, and trained instructors have ways of communicating difficult concepts to children who might otherwise not understand them. If they are left to themselves (or you) they will develop bad habits. It is hard enough to break adults out of bad habits - it is even harder for kids.

just go down the trail with them without helping them after the first lesson and see how they do. if they seem to do fine, then they're ok to be on their own. if they still fall and stuff, you should spend more time with them. its not a matter of lessons, but sometimes they do help

only 2-3. it won't take that long for them to actually get the hang of it. the instructors take them down hard slopes after a matter of time.

everyone learns at different rates of speed i do suggest for them to practice on their own in between lessons it gives them time to let the new information sink in.....don't let your kids ski or ride alone safety first.....
