to clarify, i am not religious, but i would imagine that we all want this world to be a kinder, more gentle place, so why let this divide us?

Religion has nothing to do with intelligence. It's about faith. The problem is that most of the "messengers" of each faith are so misunderstood that we fail to see the one overwhelming quality in each of them. That would be love. Each of the major religions is a "love your fellow human being" faith. No where in any book does it say; "And kick the crap out of anyone who says different." The decision to hurt with religion as the reasoning is where the intelligence, or lack there of comes into play. If we can all just realize that our individual faiths are just a quest for each of us to find inner peace and not use it as a political whipping stick, we would all get along so much better.

Religion is divisive, but real Spiritual life is harmonizing.

The Original Kingdom Gospel (do unto others) was a harmonizing Spiritual Gospel, but those who took up the Christian banner took it in a different direction with Paul's sacrifice for sin gospel. The resource below explains how a good original harmonizing message can be flipped upside-down to divide people. It's a great read.

And it's true for all nearly all religions, they start out in the light and end up in the dark.

You see you say 'we all want this to be a kinder place' but what you don't understand is YOUR ideal of kinder is now mine, In my world, mothers love their children they don't abort them. In my world, husbands work, pay their bills, love their children and are good, well, husbands. Fathers and mothers raise their children, not a check from the state. In my world, you can allow you kids to watch TV, without worrying what the next commercial might contain. In my world Each person is held responsible for their actions or in actions. In my world human life is precious, and not-replaceable.

Now if you expect me to say its OK that some want work, and I pay for them to set home watching Oprah and Phill, or its OK to hand kids in The 4 and 5th grade condoms and tell them, go for it, it will be OK, Or if you want me to just small and say oh, you cant pay attention to that, when a commercial of filth comes on, no, I want, I cant, so I guess we don't have the same goals now, do we?

I think a lot of people wrongly blame religion for being divisive. Everyone should be entitled to their own opinion since we live in a free country. No one should be ashamed or fearful to say "I am a Jew" or "I am a Catholic" or "I am an Athiest."

People let all sorts of things divide them: money, ethnicity, color, language, customs, politics, abortion, ecology, business, govt., etc, etc, etc.
Perfect example: Pol Pot, Mao and Stalin were atheists who murdered tens of millions of their own people right after outlawing religion. There was no religion to divide. Then the absence of religion and faith led to the worst mass murders known to man.

Because religion is what directs a passenger jet into a building.

no, we do not have all the same goals. Pretty simple, isn't it?

A Christian's hope is not on earth, it is in heaven.

A Christian's job is to convince/encourage/exhort/warn/love people into trusting and turning to Jesus Christ.

A Christian's life isn't about ease, comfort, getting along with everybody, helping mother earth, patting people on the back and making them feel good or anything like that. It is shining for Jesus, living a radical and unconventional lifestyle.

Jesus came not to unite mankind but to divide the sheep from the goats. He did not come to bring peace but a sword.

Living for Jesus separates you from friends, sometimes family, sometimes everybody.

But it is glorious.
