Just got my M&P full size 9mm last month. I don't regret it. 500 rounds through it so far and ZERO malfunctions. It's a surgical 9mm. Hits point of aim at 21 feet no problem.
Hopefully you got one with a late serial number. I made it a point to get a later model. Rule of thumb I go by....early models will have most of the bugs.
My M&P has a serial number prefix of MPX.
If you want to see what it did to my target, swing by MySpace and look for the MySpace Pistol Group. I'm the moderator for that specific group. Here's the link...http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&groupid=106747015&Mytoken=02F4CA11-8A0D-4BE0-BE8A6B6B936CA6B982073692
Feel free to join. No egos there. Just people who like to shoot and share their experiences.

I have not yet had a good experience with an S&W auto. I know some of their models are good but some have terrible designs.
For all i know you may have picked a good model and will have no problems.
As long as you practice it will perform fine. Practice makes perfect just like everyting else.
If you're interested in self defense test yourself doing this:
Get an 8' sheet of white paper. Go to 25 yards with a full magazine and fire at the center of the paper. If all of your shots can be seen on that piece of paper you will most likely be fine in a combat situation.(You will however still want to get a lot better)
Good luck
Have fun on the range

I have a 9mm smith and wesson model 915. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Almost never jams, very accurate.

S&W 9mm pistols are combat accurate, unless you get a model 952 9mm target pistol (which is very accurate).

I have a Model 39-2 And I love it. A lot of people have other opinions about that model but it is comfortable for me and I can hit about anything I want to with it. What model did you get? That may help other people answer your question.

as with anything pertaining to guns, it's the person behind the gun that counts. if you don't shoot a lot, practice, you'll get better. it's a good gun.
