In some churches, yes. Some people go to church not to worship God, but because church is akin to a country or social club. Hence, they go to be seen and to see others.

But Christianity doesn't teach that church is supposed to be that type of place. It is a place where one goes to gather with others to pay gratitude to God and study his word. The first kind of church holds no interest for me.

If it is then might I suggest you find a new fellowship. One that is focused on equipping the saints for the work of the Gospel?

when i was a kid, it was more like a who had the most expensive clothing contest. there were some pretty funny hats though, so it wasn't entirely boring.
