Go for Matchstick by Farrow & Ball.

Get it mixed in soft sheen from Leyland.

Matchstick is the colour for light wood units and white ceiling, skirting boards.

Jade green or a similar green.
Raspberry (fushia berry in the site i'm going to give you) colours look good with light beech and black worktops.

Pale pastel sky blue looks lovely with pale beech. Its also very traditional for kitchens. The old wives tale is that the flies see the blue, think its the sky and so don't settle.

1] check on the dodgy plaster - may need to replace or sand it down before you cover it with wall paper - check with people at hardwood store
2] check about 'texturizing' the wall - again, ask at store
3] if wall paper one wall, paint the rest of walls one of the colors in the paper
4] otherwise, paint it a favorite color of main cook - not dark or very pastel - more medium tone like:
rose
coral or peach
light lemon or pale gold
sage or leaf green
aqua
sky or smoke blue
violet
caramel
5] repeat wall, floor and worktop colors in accessories - curtains, placemats, potholders, flowerpots, utensil crock

Quiver Tan from Sherwin Williams. It's kind of a mocha color. Not sure I'd add wall paper. Crack will pop up even through the paper, just rake out any cracks and fill them with Tetron, sand and paint.

A very light yellow goes very well with beech and black.
