As far as i know they can be very well frozen, although because they are quite dense they take a while to defrost. However if they have alcohol in them like many traditional christmas cakes they will not need to be frozen and be kept for a good period of time in an air tight container, although i would wrap the cake in foil first. I guess 3 months for either choice of preserving, would be as long as i would keep them,(personal obs). Plenty of stories of wedding cakes containing alcohol being preserved to the first borns birthday!!!! (main source my mother and my microbiology experience) Happy Eattings..

Fruit cake, huh? Well the wonderful thing about fruit cake is that it takes a lot for it to go bad. You don't HAVE to freeze it.

Yes, freeze just fine but see if you can find a cake box or two to put them in. If you wrap them in foil or plastic wrap they will dry out more quickly.
When you go to thaw the cakes I would give them a little steam bath just to moisten before serving.

Yep though I'd suggest an airtight bag/container to avoid freezer burn.
