Any service worker would be extremely happy to receive a five dollar bill - as most people don't give very good tips. Especially if the tip is going straight to them, not to a collective tip that gets divided up to all staff, who may not deserve it.
When giving tips to the actual person, just don't be arrogant about it, the worst is when people give you tips and think they are sooo good because they did. If you give a tip to a deserving person, smile and say thank you, give them a compliment, cause that compliment is the thing that makes their day, but of course the money is good too! Hehe...
Everyone says ten percent of the bill, so you can add a tip when you check out and request that the money goes to a particular person (get their name) or staff who specifically worked on your room.
A really good thing to do, if the person was great to you, or did a great job, is to actually tell the manager, or leave a comment with front desk, giving that persons position and name and hopefully they will get some kind of recognition from their bosses! A lot of hotels do give prizes and bonuses to employees of the month, and if enough people leave feedback about a hard working or pleasant staff member, you can help them get that recognition.
Two or three dollars is a decent amount. Five is really nice. Ten is great!!! Maybe ten at Christmastime??? Anything less than a dollar, and don't bother, you might be insulting them. Hehe.

i am a manager at a hotel...that's a wonderful question to bring up...hotel maids are probably some of the lowest paid people on the planet.and the hardest working ..i would give everyone of them a raise if i could, unfortunately it's not up to me,but left up to the management company.... you would be surprised, but most of the time people don't tip at all.. i think 5 dollars a day is appropriate... remember if you stay more than one day sometimes you may get a different member of the housekeeping staff, so you could always ask the guest service rep at the desk for an envelope, place your tip in side write your room # on it and the date ..the rep will make sure it gets to the appropiate person...another reason this is a good idea is because most housekeepers would never take money out of a room if you are staying over without you directly giving it to them...they have strict rules re/ guest belongings...i can't tell you how much i appreciate you bringing this up...i can't wait to tell the girls on monday about this question..
ps. as to you question re/how much if its a big mess....if you don't think you are leaving enough you are probably not ...so leave a little more..you don't know how much they appreciate this...a big tip is the talk of the day for these girls...if you are doing a long term stay and want to tip at the end of your stay leave it a the desk and the executive housekeeper will distribute it evenly between her staff......hope this helps...happy new year to you

Considering what a hotel room cost per night, this is one place where you don't need to tip a percentage of the total bill. Somewhere between 3 and 5 dollars is pretty standard.
If your staying more than one night, tip daily because you may not have the same maid everyday.

We generally tip a dollar per person per day, and then a little extra the last day.... This is for basic service if we leave the room in a neat condition.
For instance on my bachelorette party, the suite was a disaster. We weren't destructive, but 6 drunk girls in a hotel suite with a mini-kitchen etc... Anyway, we left $100 for 3 nights. That is an exception though, not a rule.

If you want really good service, tip the cleaning staff a couple of dollars(more if room's a mess) each day that you're at the hotel. They will take better care of your room--checking who might "wander" into your room while they are cleaning the area. This can prevent the loss of items from your room.
Besides, these folks are the lowest paid workers in the hotel, but have a big impact on your level of comfort during your stay.

hotel maids do not get paid much. They get paid minimum wage. So any tips helps. Only tip what you can afford and what seems fair to you, even if you tip at the end of your stay is already good enough.
If you would like your room cleaned everyday and you like the service, you can tip more generously.

Regular fare, we leave $3.00 per day. If we find we have unbelievable service we will leave a little more. If you are incredibly messy, judge it for yourself and what you are willing to live with. I am a neatnik and still leave no less than $3.00.
