Your viewpoint of the Catholic church is ignorant.
Truthfully, you have no idea how difficult it is to be a practicing Catholic!
The practicing Catholic perform's the above out of pure respect toward our Lord, we ask for nothing in return.
Only the hope of one day being brought back into perfection.
Regardless, of what Christian religion you choose salvation is possible; the Pope was very clear on the latter.
Sadly, not everyone has the opportunity to become a Catholic, either the person is brought up into another denomination or the grace was never provided.
The above Christians still have every opportunity to enter into God's kingdom.
View the thief on the cross (next to Jesus), all his life he was a horrible person, when he confessed to Jesus the thief was saved.
Jesus replied: "Today you will be with me in Paradise." Luke 23:43
Important note:
Many non-catholic churches view this verse to mean their is no purgatory.
One has to understand, the thief's purgatory was his painful death on the cross.
The thief faced his purgatory here on Earth, the latter is an event that many of us will face.
Furthermore, our pain here on Earth will remove a long stay in Purgatory.
Regardless, as to the time we may have to purify, Purgatory is the gateway to heaven and we will be comforted by the angels.
"If the work which any man has built on the foundation [which is Christ] survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire" (1 Cor 3: 14-15).

No thats not how it works in the Catholic Church. Thats how the fundie protestants do it. They believe in "once saved always saved". Catholics do not. We believe in true confession to God and true repentance, and penance for our sins
"As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5–8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9–10, 1 Cor. 3:12–15). Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11–13)."

That's not at all how it is. Sometimes penance may be prayer, other times it is making things right if it is possible. Apologies, charitable acts, that kind of thing. Confession is not just for forgiveness and penance either, it is also for the spiritual counseling you receive (or should receive) by the priest.

Kind of.
God forgives all repentent sinners.
The role of the Church is to lead people to God.
One way of requesting spiritual help is to ask your family and friends on Earth or your Catholic family and friends in heaven to pray for you.
The Hail Mary prayer simply recites Bible passages (the Word of God) and asks the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for us:
Hail Mary Full of grace, the Lord is with you. (These are the words the angel Gabriel said to Mary, a Bible quote.)
Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (This is Mary's cousin Elizabeth's greeting, another bible quote.)
Holy Mary, (The angel Gabriel said she was full of grace and Elizabeth said she was blessed.)
Mother of God, (the Bible says Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, God the Son)
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (A simple request to pray for us.)
Amen.
With love in Christ.
