To start playing right away, I suggest getting a basic chord book, and a song book of your favorite popular pieces.

Learn the chord to these songs and just start strumming and singing along.

Once you've got a few pieces under your belt, find some other people to play with. Teach each other what you know. You learn fastest by learning from someone just a little more advanced than you.

Later, pick up some books that show you other styles of playing, such as flat picking, finger picking, slide guitar and other genres.

et's say you aren't able to take lessons. One of the most important things you can do is to enjoy your practice. So pick one of these ideas that seems most enjoyable to you.

Find the tab for some simpler songs or riffs and learn them. For a while I really enjoyed playing the opening riff to Today by Smashing Pumpkins.

Learn some chord progressions and start making up your own song.

Find an instrumental song that has a simple beat and play along with it.

*Someone pointed out that we learn to speak by speaking not by repeating what other people say. So simply playing and experimenting is a legitimate way to learn.

get a book that will teach you how to READ notes cause their are a huge amount of great guitarists but only a handful that know how to read music.

personally, i think it's a lot better that u get a REAL teacher because then, u can ask specific questions about notes, intervals, barres, chords, etc.
