Does that mean that Asian men, or Mongols, or American Indian men, any man in fact, with thick, lustrous, long hair, is going AGAINST nature? And AGAINST the Bible??
"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her"
(1 Corinthians 11: 14-15, KJV)

Either the Bible is wrong, or those men are defying nature itself?
Serious answers please.

'The Mask'.
Ok, so say we accept that 'you and God' have the same opinion on things. Could you use that close relationship tell me what your buddy 'God' meant by saying that long hair on men was 'against nature'?

To 'paula r':
So if it is true, then what part of nature are these men going against? They shouldn;t be *able* to have long hair if nature wouldn't allow it?

I suppose that means that all those long-haired male animals are going against nature too. Those horses and lions and spider monkeys should get a haircut!

Paul wrote these words - or rather the Greek from which they are translated and it is in a section about the assembly (1 Corinthians 11: 2-16).
I would suggest that behind these words is the thought that we should easily be able to distinguish between men and women and this is most easily done through the hair style In verse 13, he says 'Decide amongst yourselves' which suggests that he is not over concerned with what they decide but he goes on to suggest that men should have short hair and women long. It is a suggestion - not a command and I think he would be amused by the thought that we would take it seriously almost two thousand years later
When Paul uses the word which we translate as nature, which he does in several places in his letters, he means that the thing corresponds with how it is found truly to be without artificial change

I don't know if I would look to the Bible for hair styling tips. :-) They are a little out of date, eh?
I could see the point the Bible is making if human hair only grew to a certain length. For instance, a chimpanzee's hair will only grow about 3 or 4 inches long. So 'nature itself teaches' us that a chimp's hair is only 3 or 4 inches long. But human hair can grow indefinitely. To cut it short is against nature isn't it?
But, short hair in a hot climate (like the middle east where the Bible was written) is probably a great idea. So perhaps that is why the writers of this particular bit of the Bible were so hip to short hair.
Although the images of Jesus always show him w/ shoulder length, long hair, not a crew cut. Which is a bit odd because the Romans of his time period tended to keep fairly short hair.
Who would have thought that sartorial conundrums would be captured in the Bible?

the only faith, that's a christian faith, that has the entire actuality is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. i understand this to be actual and am proud to assert it. It has the fullness of the gospel. A prophet is as quickly as back on earth as are 12 apostles and the priesthood has been restored that's how Christ's church grow to be interior the olden days. we don't practice bits and products like different church homes do, we practice approximately each and all the gospel.

If that was true our hair would grow no more than two inches as nature would teach. That being said besides the normal hypocrisy that little book shows..is it then saying that Jesus is a shame. Is it hair that proves masculinity and femininity? I hope not. You also may not want to point out races its not kosher. And why is the first word spoken with a lisp?

Wait so NOT cutting your hair is against nature? So shaving, manicures, and all that are natural, haircuts, are not. Got it.
And christians believeing in nature would also be hypocritical, since there is proof of evolution and the age of the earth in plants.
I would imagine some homophobe added the hair part later, obviously w/ the emergence of boys wearing girl's pants and eyeliner that has gone in the pooper.

I want to add another corollary to "nature teaches" that points in the opposite direction. Did you know that several species of Parrot Fish can change their gender? Does this mean that Transsexualism is caused by Divine inspiration? Before you reject that posit out of hand, let me inform you that some early pagan groups thought so! They revered people who had atypical gender or sexuality and thought such people had the power to heal by "two-spirit" divinity, hence they made them "witch-doctors" or "medicine-men".

Believing the bible is ok to do, it is also ok to believe in God. But what both God and I hate is "religion." People use there own lame interpretations and everyone else listens to that person. That is modern day religion. Don't be religious, be spiritual.

Male lions have long hair, which is their glory. Samson had long hair, and it was his glory. In most bird species, it is the male who has the long fancy feathers.
The Bible contradicts itself - go figure.
