Catfishing is about the only type of fishing I do except when fishing for cut bait.
Over the years of trial and error, I found many good combinations, but the one I am most favored to is the Abu Garcia Ambassador Red 6600CB with bait alert (clicker). Very smooth reel that is durable and most reliable. Also, for a beginner it is a superb reel because the setting can be adjusted for minimal backlashing.
Rods, there is many like the Ugly Stick series, but my favorite is the Cabela's Whuppin' Stick! Again durable and reliable to handle the big hogs! I like the longer rods myself, but that is different with each person who goes out fishing.
For line I use the original braided 50# spiderwire and 2/0 circle Lazer Hooks by Eagleclaw.
Rigging depends on where your fishing, river, lake, ect...
Good luck and enjoy the change going to a casting set up. It's a whole new world of fishing.

I have a multi use pole set up Mainly for the toothy critters which are quite large here, But I'll also use it for cattin' It's an extra heavy 5'6" gander mountain Guide rod, topped with an Abu Garcia 6500 c-3 baitcaster. I've even landed a 56 lb snapping turtle with that rod. It doesn't matter What kind of rod you use for some applications I have a 9 foot flyrod hooked with a spinning reel for crappie fishing It's all in HOW you want something set up

An Abu Garcia Ambassador 6500 would be ideal for catfishing, BUT you sound like you are NEW to the sport of fishing. Might be a good idea to start with either a "spinning" outfit or "spincast".
Some good spinning reels- Daiwa "Black Gold" , Pflueger "President", or Shimano "Symetre".
Some decent spincast- Daiwa "Goldcast" 3, Zebco "Omega", Zebco "Prostaff" 888, Zebco 808.
For rods- If you are MAINLY soaking bait on the bottom or floating bait on top for Cats try a 1 piece "Shakespeare Ugly Stik" or even one of those indestructible "Zebco Rhino" rods.
You CAN spend lots more and lots less in regards to rods & reels.
Here are some companys that are usually VERY reliable:
1. Shimano
2. Daiwa
3. Quantum
4. Pflueger
5. Abu Garcia
Go to "www.cabelas.com" and "www.basspro.com" for REVIEWS on rods & reels.
Hope this help ya? Good luck!

a short strong rod, made from solid fiber glass, a wench type reel, and 25 lb line, with large sinkers, & large hooks,
you don,t need to cast , just drop you line over the side of the boat,

S_M_C has hit the nail right on the head there and to be honest i don't think you will get any better than that, its exactly what i would have advised, if it was me go with Abu Garcia, I've fished with them all my life and have only once let me down, they can be used for saltwater and fresh water. Available here
