you need butter, fresh nuts, flour, and spices
insulated cookie sheets, foil, cooling racks

Step One
For best flavor and texture, use a good-quality butter rather than margarine, vegetable shortening, or lard.
DON'T use reduced-fat margarine -- manufacturers reduce the fat by replacing it with water, which gives cookies a cake-like texture instead of the crispy crunchy flaky texture of your grandma's cookies.
And avoid cheap butter -- the cheaper the butter, the higher the water content. Again, you'll end up with little cakes instead of cookies.

Step Two
If you use salted butter, you may not need to add the salt the cookie recipe calls for.

Step Three
Make sure the baking soda or baking powder is well broken up before you add it to the mixing bowl -- soda "flavor bursts" spoil the effect of homemade cookies!

Step Four
Go ahead, double the vanilla. You know you want to . . .

Step Five
Many baking spices have volatile ingredients. For the liveliest flavor, buy and use them promptly rather than keeping them around the house. This is much easier and cheaper now that many grocery stores offer bulk spices.
6Step SixExperiment with nut varieties. For example, hazelnuts with milk or semi-sweet chocolate is a match made in heaven.
Step Seven
Good-quality chocolate chips make a huge difference! Don't stint on the quality of your most important flavor ingredients.

Step Eight
Insulated cookie sheets are a life-saver! Cookies bake more evenly, and the even baking gives you a longer time period to pull the cookies out of the oven "perfectly baked."
Step Nine
You can use foil instead of greasing the cookie sheet -- spatulas work well on the foil and cleanup is far easier. And, if you butter the foil, you get the added flavor of the butter with the easy cleanup of foil.

Step Ten
Using a small ice cream scoop to put cookie batter on the sheets speeds things up and gives rounder, more uniformly sized cookies.

Step Eleven
Cookies are done baking when they're no longer glossy, or when tiny (about a half millimeter) holes open up all the way across the top of the cookie. If you like your cookies more caramelized, you can leave them in the oven a couple minutes longer than this bubble-break stage.

Step Twelve
Cooling racks let your cookies release more steam than if you put them on paper towels or paper bags, so they'll keep their crispy crunchy texture longer.

Step Thirteen
If your cookies aren't all eaten by bedtime, store them in an airtight container.

Search the net for a recipe, for example peanut butter cookies, snickerdoodles, chocolate chip. Then make sure you have all the ingredients. Be sure to preheat the oven. I hope you have the measuring cups, spoons, and a cookies sheet. I always put a layer of foil on the cookie sheet to get a nice light bottom to the cookie. When you measure the ingredients be as exact as possible. Level off the flour, sugar, etc so the amounts are exact. Brown sugar has to be packed. Read the recipe 2 or 3 times to make sure you understand all the steps and try to do it as exactly as possible to get the best results. Let me know how it goes.

Easy Peanut Butter Blossoms

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar plus some extra to roll blossoms in
1 egg
Hershey Kisses

Mix ingredients. Roll 1 tspn dough into ball. Roll ball in extra sugar. Bake at 350 for 8 minutes. Press a Hershey Kiss into cookie before removing from cookie sheet. Wait one minute. Remove from cookie sheet and let cool (and chocolate re-harden-it will get soft when you press it into cookie).

It is easy. Get yourself a bag of Nestles chocolate chips and follow the recipe. You will need flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, vanilla, butter/margaine, eggs and nuts if you like them. You just mix all the ingredients as instructed, put in preheated oven about 375 for 10 minutes. Easy

Go to the local market. Buy a roll of cookie dough (whichever variety you prefer). Roll the dough into small balls. Put balls about 1.5-2 inches apart from each other on a non-stick cooking pan. Set oven to 350 degrees F. Put in oven for 11-12 minutes. Volia!

Find a cookie recipe, buy the ingredients, follow the recipe.

Make sure you have cookie sheets and a regular oven to bake them in. Oven mitts are a good idea, too.

Sugar Cookies Recipe courtesy Alton Brown

Get more holiday recipes
3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon milk
Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough

Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg and milk and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, and beat until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl. Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Sprinkle surface where you will roll out dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough from refrigerator at a time, sprinkle rolling pin with powdered sugar, and roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Move the dough around and check underneath frequently to make sure it is not sticking. If dough has warmed during rolling, place cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill. Cut into desired shape, place at least 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat, and bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes after removal from oven and then move to complete cooling on wire rack. Serve as is or ice as desired. Store in airtight container for up to 1 week
