There is a late race caution flag in a race of say 200 laps==The caution flag come out on lap 199. Nascar came up with this rule for the race to have a 1 time try to finish under green. Say lap 201 is the lap the green flag flies. Lap 202 is the white Flag lap then the Checkered. If another yellow Flag flies after the 1st Green flag flies then the race ends under caution and the cars finish in order of the electronic scoring loops!!!!!

If a caution comes out in the closing laps and the race cannot restart before the race would be over they have a green/white checker finish. But this is only if the white flag (signaling last lap) has not been put out. Also there is only one attempt at a G/W/C. If there is another caution then the race will end under yellow flag. The G/W/C means you get the green flag (to restart) at the start/finish line, then next lap you get the white flag (signaling last lap) when the leader crosses the S/F line, and finally you get the checkered flag (race over) on the next time the leader crosses the S/F line. This was put into effect to try and give the fans a chance to have the race end under racing conditions instead of caution laps. They limited it to one chance after a Craftsman Truck race had three G/W/C.

Nascar's answer for the fans to see a true race finish. It's so that a race doesn't end under caution. However, if there is a caution after they've thrown the green, white, checker, then the race is over and whoever is leading is the winner.

If a caution comes out with a 2 laps remaining they go into overtime meaning they go over the desired laps. When the restart begins or the green flag is dropped they have 2 laps till' the finish. If a wreck or caution flys within the 2 laps the race is over and the drivers finishes are determined by the last loop they crossed.

If there is a late race caution, the race will go over the scheduled race laps under caution.
The "green" flag will wave once they get back racing again.
The "white" flag will come next.
The "checkered" is last.
Thus, "green-white-checker".

It is usually an irritating end to a good race! I hate it. Ed P said it well.

some idiotic way of finishing a race in NA$CAR so the newbies will stop throwing trash at the end of a race. This is just one of the ignorant things that have changed in NA$CAR and I am sure France will dream up some other crap for you all next year.
