I am from a foreign country and have a very empty resumee since work is so scarce there. Now I finished my studies here and I am not the youngest anymore either, but I do not have any work experience whatsoever. I just worked part-time and temp jobs in my life to get by, but won't get any reference for that. Would I be better off making up places I worked at before?

A phone call is a small investment for a company to make when hiring a new employee. Bet that they will check, and do not lie about previous employment.

If you do - remember what you told them. Someone I knew had gone through about 40 jobs, so obviously he wasn't always truthful about what he had been doing. Last time he got a good job, they waited a year then asked him to fill in his application form once more 'just for the record' - and he couldn't remember what he had put the first time!

If you put down firms which have gone bust, it is very difficult for HR departments to check up with the personnel records of a company which no longer exists.

Being dishonest is not a good way to try to get a job. It shows what kind of person you are. If you want to be known as dishonest, or a liar, then lie on your application. Otherwise, be honest. An empty resume is okay as long as your are honest about it. No one will think any less of you.

No.

While it would be hard to verify a foreign job, if they did try and confirmed you were lying, you would be fired.

Getting fired is even harder to explain away than no jobs at all.
