I'm getting a Doberman. What would the average cost for microchip ID be? Also, what would the average cost of the microchip for a kitten be? I'm considering getting him done as well.

The price is the same regardless of dog cat ferret bird etc.
Around 35-50 each but may be less if you do them at the same time as there may be only one office fee. Also check shelters and rescues, humane society etc. some have a low cost vaccine and chip day.

I purchased my last 2 from a rescue with prepaid avid registration for 15 each, my vet implanted them free with my next visit.

Please make sure you register and keep a chip updated with the info to contact both you and at least one out of area contact. In area is great for most things but in the event of a area wide catastrophy none of those local contacts may work like during a hurricane. A lot of chipped and registered animals sat in shelters because the contacts could not be reached.

Chipping without registering which some dont know you have to do unless your vet does it for you is useless.

Microchipping your pets is a wonderful idea. The cost varies in different parts of the country but it generally runs about $20 without an exam. Size of the animal doesn't matter. There is a group called Planned Pethood that runs low cost vaccine and mircochip clinics in some parts of the country.

Check with shelters in your area to see which microchip readers they have, because some chips can not be read by many shelters and Vet's offices.

My vet charged $45 for my cat plus the registration fee, which was about $20. The process is the same whether it is a cat or a dog, so I would think the cost should be too.

Some shelters offer the service at reduced rates.

I personally do not think cats should be allowed out. The only reason I had mine done was I had to travel with her and I wanted to cover all bases for if something went wrong and she got away.

I live in NY and the average cost is $50.00-note: when you do chip your pet, please be sure to fill out and register the information with the chip co.
