Sickle hemoglobin and thalassemia, both are due to an abnormality in the amino acid composition of hemoglobin. Beta zero means that there are no beta chains (amino acid chains found in normal adult hemoglobin). Beta plus means that some beta chains are being synthesized. Sickle thalassemia is milder than thalassemia major. Beta plus is milder than beta zero.
