...every time that somebody on here shows the slightest sign of being unhappy, people advise them to go to their doctor?

It is normal sometimes for people to be unhappy from time to time, it is part of healthy human emotion. People can't survive as positive junkies. Fobbing everyone off to the doctor who is a little bit teary will only make the person think there is something wrong with them, when maybe they only need a bit of positive encouragement.

I agree,

I would only suggest for someone to seek medical or psychological help is there is a sure sign of some type of disorder or some type of medical condiion that needs to be attended to. I personally went through an anxiety disorder many years ago and although I seeked doctors guidance, it was the help of a counsellor that got me back on track.

Good question though I think too many people on these forums try to diagnose too much and maybe that is why after they try and diagnose they ask the person to see their doctor in case they are wrong about an answer. I can see why they say it for that reason only.

I do agree to a point, however it's probably the fact that from here we really can't tell how serious a person's problem is. For one person, saying 'I'm unhappy' may mean they are having a bad day and for another it might mean that they have been feeling significantly and unusually unhappy for a while. I guess people are erring on the side of caution.

Quite right!! all to many go running to the doc for Minor matters.
Although a lot depends on the reason for being unhappy in the first place. Sometimes a good chin wag is all we need to get back on track.

I love it...I hate this way of thinking also...it is like, to me, a communist plot to make us all feel that if we are not all emotionaless, acting all the same way all the time, then we are not acceptable in today's society...this is what it is really about...we can't even be sad, or overly happy, or excitable, etc...we need to all me on the same, line wave...I hate it...simply hate it..great point I feel the same way

If you read carefully, you can usually detect by the tone and content of the question, if the person is down, or seriously depressed.

I will then give an appropriate response.

Mood variation is, indeed, healthy and normal. In fact, the complete absence of ANY sadness (or mood variation) is pathological in and of itself.

Depression, however, is NOT normal. These are two very, very different scenarios. In the case of depression, physiological intervention (e.g., medication) is necessary.

Good point...
I agree perhaps it's because they want some attention or sympathy.
