If the ears smell bad it isn't mites. It is a yeast infection. Take your dog to the vet. He/she will take a culture to see what is causing the infection and prescribe the right medication.
After the ears are better, make a habit of sniffing your dogs ears every week or so to check for the same problem.
If you feed a dog food that has corn in it, change the food. Corn can cause the infection in some dogs.

my dog had this same exact problem.
Yes the vet can give you meds so he doesnt get infection and to get rid of the mites.
If you cant go to the vet or you do and the mites seem to come back, buy mineral oil (i know seems weird) and put some on a soft cloth and wash out the ears. I dont know why exactly but the stuff works REALLY well.
I wash out my dogs ears with it everytime i see something nasty in there and he's only had the problems once.

If your dogs ear stinks then chances are there is an infection, probablt caused by the ear mites. This will need to be treated by the vet with antibiotics and ear mite medications.

Definitely take him to a vet or at least to a groomer to get them cleaned out. In the meantime, get an ear mite medication from the pet store and using a soft cloth or piece of cotton GENTLY clean the outside of the ear canal DO NOT USE A COTTON SWAB! (i.e. Q-tip type) to do this, there is too much risk of injuring the eardrum. Do take him to the vet though as he is in misery and this can be considered animal neglect if not taken care of.

You can get ear medications from places such as pet smart. You're going to need to gently clean his ears out with a damp cotton ball. Then apply the meds into the ear, and gently massage the ear cannal. The blood could be from the ear mites waste, they do eat blood, so it would be red
I work at a shelter, and mites are extremly common, and its not always a needed trip to the vet

Put a drop of baby oil or mineral oil in each ear. This will smother the ear mites and kill them off temporarily.
Then get him to a vet ASAP.
And shame on you for letting your dog suffer for so long.

VET!!! Ear mites are not as common in dogs as they are in cats, so there is a GOOD chance that it is an INFECTION and not mites. The dog needs a vet ASAP!!!!!!!

Take him to the vet and get some meds for him. It only gets worse if you dont do anything..also, you might wanna clean the ears once in a while.

If your dog is as bad as you say he is, he's probably miserable and needs to be taken to the vet for relief and treatment.
