I got the athletic works sports mouth guard for Walmart, but I fit it to my bottom teeth (so it would stay in better during the night-I thought) and it made my headaches worse and really bad. I don't know what to do- I need something that stays in my mouth at night. I have to stop the headaches and I get tooth sensitivity too. My problem is if their is something in my mouth then I chew on it more and can't fall asleep. If the over-the-counter mouth guard make my headaches worse, I am afraid the dentist made ones are just going to do the same thing- Or do those "click" into place?

Night guards from the dental office are custom made to fit your teeth and they do stay in place. There several different types that can be made...soft, hard, NTI, some fit the lower teeth and some the upper, some position the jaw...your dentist can evaluate your particular needs and prescribe the proper appliance for you.

,you can buy mouth guards at drug storeand over the web, just make sure it's soft not the hard, I do think the ones the Dr makes will be better but make sure it is soft.
try sleeping proped up a little not flat at night, use advil if you don't have anything else for pain and use heat on you jaw, neck and ear area
don't eat hard foods or chewy. don't open wide
you do need to find a Dr that specializes in TMJ/TMD and get a pano x-ray that will show your joints
good luck!
you can email direct if you have other questions

The best ones are the ones the dentists make. They fit perfectly. But they are quite expensive. I think mine was $200(?) maybe more. He warned me to always put it away because dogs love to chew on it. It's like nyla bone material. My problem was, as soon as I woke up, I'd take it out of my mouth, and lay it somewhere. Since I was always still half asleep, I couldn't find it usually. One day....... my dog did.
No more mouthguard :(
